NEWTON, Mass. - Boston College junior Kelcie Hromisin scored with 3:29 left in the first overtime as the Boston University field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest to the 15th-ranked on Friday evening at Newton Campus Field.

Down a goal, the Terriers (2-3) earned back-to-back corners and used the latter to record an equalizer with 11:48 left in regulation. After receiving a pass from junior Sofi Laurito, sophomore Amanda Cassera had two shots saved at the right post before pushing the ball past the goal line on her third try.

A corner goal in the 52nd minute opened the scoring. BC freshman Brooke Matherson poked in a rebound above the right post following a blocked attempt by sophomore Emily McCoy.

For the first time since 2009, the Comm. Ave. rivalry went to overtime. Both teams had strong scoring chances in the extra session and the Terriers fended off a pair of BC corners before the home team came up with the winner.

Neither team scored in the first half despite both teams putting together quality scoring chances. The Terriers exhibited great defense at the top of their zone and created a handful of opportunities in transition.

On the other end, the Eagles earned four first-half corners, including two right before halftime. The BU defense and senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke were up to the task, however, and the teams entered the break scoreless.

The Eagles, who improved to 4-1, held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal, as Cerda Eimbcke turned in a seven-save performance. Junior Leah Settipane recorded five saves for BC.

The home team held a 12-3 advantage in corners with all of the Terriers' corners coming in the second half.

Sophomore back Bea Baumberger Altirriba, who was facing her older sister (Nina), had a strong game for the Terriers, including a stellar tackle early in overtime when the Eagles penetrated the circle with numbers.

BU will take a week-long break from the schedule before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, for its Patriot League opener at Lafayette. Game time is set for noon.
