WEST POINT, N.Y. - Highlighted by junior Felix De Bona's third goal of the week, the Boston University men's soccer team claimed a 1-1 draw at Army West Point on Saturday afternoon.
Earning their fifth draw of the season, the Black Knights (4-6-5, 2-2-3 PL) netted the equalizer in the 58th minute and used 10 saves by Chris Britt to keep the Terriers (11-4-2, 5-1-2 PL) away from three points. Due to the draw, BU drops to second in the PL standings at 17 points, one behind Colgate (6-2-0 PL) with both teams having one game remaining.
De Bona netted two goals on Wednesday in a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross and was set up for his team-leading eighth goal of the season by a pair of underclassmen. After Army's backline deflected the ball away from a charging De Bona inside the box, freshman T.J. Butzke collected the ball and sent it toward sophomore Danny Foen on the left side. Foen quickly settled the pass and then sent a cross back into the box for De Bona's header and his first career assist.
The Terriers entered the locker room at the half with the 1-0 lead behind a 7-4 advantage in shots. They came out quickly in the second trying to get a second score, as Britt stopped a hard attempt by De Bona. After the Black Knights were unable to connect on back-to-back corners in the 57th minute, Britt came up big again with a save on junior Mark Wadid's shot.
The save allowed Army to go on the counter, as Tommy Jaeger moved the ball up the left side toward midfield. Jaeger eventually found Okheem Riley, who got near the BU goal and sent a short pass at an angle to a charging Cody Guerry for a quick shot and 1-1 tie.
Junior Matt Gilbert earned his first save in the 60th minute and would later have his most impressive save at 85:02 when he used his outstretched arms to punch away a header by Cameron Niccum off Army's corner to keep the game tied.
The Black Knights became more physical as the game went on, earning 10 fouls in the second half after just receiving four in the first. They held off two BU corners in the 88th minute and had another save by Britt at 89:13 to stay in the game. Army earned its own corner in the final 10 seconds but was unable to convert, as BU went to its fifth overtime contest of the season.
The Terriers applied most of the pressure in the two overtimes, forcing Britt into a combined three saves in the final 20 minutes. Gilbert needed just one but did again have to work with the backline to defend against a corner in the final seconds to stave off defeat.
BU finished the game with a 17-14 lead in shots, including a 10-3 advantage on net, while Army edged the Terriers in corners, 7-6. De Bona and sophomore Anthony Viteri, making his return since suffering an injury on Oct. 13 at Brown, both attempted four shots apiece to lead BU's offense.
While the Terriers require help to repeat as the regular season champions, they do control their own destiny for an opening round bye in the six-team tournament. BU will next end the regular season at Navy on Friday (Nov. 6) with action slated for 7 p.m.
