BOSTON -
Despite a strong start to the game, the Boston University women's basketball team dropped its season opener to crosstown rival Northeastern, 77-44, on Friday afternoon in a packed Case Gym.
The Terriers look toward their next game on Wednesday, another home affair against Albany at 7 p.m. in Case Gym.
Troi Melton led the Terriers with 12 points, nine of which came in the first quarter. Despite her strong start to the game and a 15-8 lead after the first 10 minutes, BU faltered in the second quarter and could not regain its momentum for the remainder of the game.
Meghan Green was solid late in the game, contributing eight points and rebounds nearly all of which came in the second half. Courtney Latham also found her stride and contributed 10 points by the end of the game.
Northeastern was led by Samantha DeFreese's 24 points and Francesca Sally's 13 rebounds. In total, the Huskies had three players in double-digit scoring.
The Huskies shot an impressive 51.4 percent from the field in the second half and 45.5 percent overall while the Terriers struggled to finish and ended the game with a 29.8 overall shooting percentage.
NU also dominated the paint, scoring 40 points in the red and out-rebounding the Terriers 47-33. Their 15 offensive rebounds translated to 20 points.
BU started off strong, going on a 13-2 run to take a nine-point lead with two minutes left in the first quarter. Northeastern answered with a flurry of its own, however, and outscored the Terriers, 20-11 in the second period.
Down just two points at halftime, BU was unable to stop the Husky charge as Northeastern scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to put itself at a distance the Terriers could not overcome.
Northeastern continued to build its lead over the course of the second half until settling on a final score of 77-44 to start the season.
