ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Despite their best efforts, the shorthanded Terriers could not pull off a victory against Navy on Wednesday night and settled for a 48-40 loss in Alumni Hall. BU had just eight players available against the Mids due to injury and illness.
Clodagh Scannell led the game with 14 points and was one of just two players in the game to reach double-digit scoring. The other was Navy's Chloe Stapleton, who scored 11 points off of three 3-pointers.
The Terriers shot 38.3 percent overall and improved in the second half with a 41.7 percent average from the field. Navy was limited to 35 percent shooting but a 5-of-11 first-half performance from beyond the arc was the biggest difference maker in the game.
BU was strong in the post, outscoring the Mids 30-20 in the paint but Navy bested the Terriers in second-chance scoring, earning 14 points off of 12 offensive rebounds. Turnovers were also costly for BU, with 18 miscues becoming 17 Midshipmen points.
The first half exhibited very even play, with four tied scores and two lead changes. Each team held the lead for nearly equal amounts of time but Navy's leads came at the beginning and end of the half, ultimately giving the Midshipmen a 25-18 advantage going into halftime.
After the Mids scored the first five points of the game, BU scored the next five to tie the game. Play continued in that fashion for the ensuing five minutes until a free throw by Meghan Doogan gave the Terriers its first lead of the contest, 10-9.
BU held the lead for six minutes but an 11-0 run by Navy would give the Mids their largest lead of the half, 22-14, a deficit that would ultimately decide the game.
The Terriers put up a fight in the second half and kept up with the Midshipmen but couldn't make up for the first half. Navy went up by 13 points early, its largest lead of the contest, but BU went on a 12-2 run to make it a three-point game.
BU's lack of personnel got the best of them down the stretch, as the Terriers couldn't keep up their momentum and suffered a 48-40 loss to the Mids.
Boston University travels home to play a game with Lafayette on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. in Case Gym. The Terriers will be celebrating National Women and Girls in Sports Day and Saturday will also be BU's annual Pink Game.
