WORCESTER, Mass. -
The Boston University women's lacrosse team fought back from an early 5-1 deficit to win the game in overtime, 9-8, on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Holy Cross. The Crusaders (2-7, 2-1 PL) did not trail until the final goal of the game, which was scored by Taylor Hardison to win it for the Terriers (4-3, 2-0 PL).
Hardison scored two goals on the day including a game-tying goal midway through the second period that took away Holy Cross' advantage for the first time in over 26 minutes. Mallory Collins and Kelsey Marafioti also notched two goals apiece.
Caroline Meegan made eight saves including five in the second half and two on free position shots to help the Terriers in their comeback. Holy Cross used two goalies, who combined for four saves.
Despite BU controlling the ball for the majority of the first 10 minutes of the game, Holy Cross opened scoring when Kate Marino netted her first of the day more than 12 minutes into the contest.
Sofia Robins tied it up soon after, however, scoring on a free position opportunity to make it a 1-1 game, the last time Holy Cross was without the lead in the first half.
The Crusaders regained their advantage with 11 minutes remaining in the first half when Meegan saved a free position shot but Holy Cross maintained possession and quickly shot the go-ahead goal while on the man-advantage.
After the Crusaders netted two more to reach their largest lead of the day, 5-1, Marafioti scored took control and scored the final two goals of the half, first on a pass by Lindsay Weiner and then on a foul reset to cut the Holy Cross advantage to 5-3 at halftime.
The Terriers used the wind at their backs to their advantage during the second half, and battled back to tie the game with just over 16 minutes remaining. After the squads exchanged goals to open the period, BU scored two straight to tie it at 6-6.
Holy Cross was quick to regain its lead, however, and scored the next two goals for an 8-6 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining in the game.
Collins took control and made a nifty move to the net to cut into the Crusader lead and Remy Nolan scored on a free position with one minute remaining to tie the game at 8-8 and force an overtime period.
BU was quick to score in the extra minutes as Taylor Hardison netted a pass from Sofia Robins to give the Terriers their first lead of the game less than one minute into overtime.
The Terriers held off the Crusaders for the remainder of the game and took a hard-fought victory to stay perfect in Patriot League contests.
BU is back in action on Saturday in the first game of a double header with the men's team on Nickerson Field. The Terriers take on Navy at noon.
