PRINCETON, N.J. - Despite junior Mark Wadid netting his first goal of the season, the Boston University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision after Princeton converted on an 87th-minute corner kick at Roberts Stadium on Saturday evening.
Playing in their home opener, the defending co-Ivy League regular season champion Tigers improve to 2-2, as the Terriers (3-2) were denied the opportunity of starting a season with three straight road victories for the first time since 1994.
Princeton came out attacking early and record three shots in the first 10 minutes before grabbing the 1-0 advantage at 10:20 on Brendan McSherry's first goal of the season. The lead did not last long though, as Wadid quickly pounced on a misplayed ball by the Tigers' keeper Ben Hummel for the equalizer at 26:56.
Junior Matt Gilbert recorded three saves in the first half to keep the score at 1-1 entering the locker room. Princeton owned an 11-4 advantage in shots and almost scored a second goal in the 45th minute off a corner kick. BU's backline earned a team save against Nick Badalamenti, as he sailed the following attempt high over the crossbar before the horn sounded.
The Tigers kept the attack going early in the second half with back-to-back corners in the 48th minute but were unable to convert. BU had an opportunity 12 minutes later to grab the lead, but Hummel stopped Wadid's shot for his first save of the game.
Junior David Asbjornsson went wide on the rebound and later had a shot on goal at 74:41. The Terriers would not have another attempt until Wadid also sent one wide in the 89th minute.
By then, the Tigers had already grabbed the lead, as Josh Miller used his left leg to flick in the ball past Gilbert off Nico Hurtado's corner at 86:56. Hurtado had two assists for the victory.
Princeton finished with a 19-9 advantage in shots and 6-2 lead in corners while also receiving their ninth yellow card in four games. Hummel tallied two saves, while Gilbert had five for BU.
Following a two-game road trip, the Terriers will start a three-game homestand on Thursday (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. against local rival Harvard.
