BOSTON - Despite owning a 19-shot advantage, the Boston University men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw against Bucknell in the Patriot League opener on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
With their first tie of the season, the defending regular season champion Terriers move to 4-2-1 (0-0-1 PL) and extend their unbeaten streak in conference play to 10 games. Led by senior Jeroen Blugh's equalizer in the 24th minute, the offense has now scored a goal in at least seven games to open a season for the first time since 1994.
The Bison (3-3-2, 0-0-1 PL) struck first at 14:44 when Chris Thorsheim converted on a penalty kick and escaped with the draw behind Mike Lansing's 11 saves.
Thorsheim had his first quality look at 9:53 when his header off a cross was saved by the perfectly positioned junior Matt Gilbert, who tallied five saves. A BU turnover outside the box five minutes later allowed the Bucknell counter attack to put pressure on Gilbert. Thorsheim had a pair of shots stopped but during the scrum, a penalty kick was awarded.
BU quickly went on the attack and had four shots blocked by Bucknell's backline with a fifth attempt saved by Lansing over the following 10 minutes. After the Bison sent freshman T.J. Butzke's shot out of bounds, junior Mark Wadid lofted the corner for Blugh to head past Langsing to get on the scoreboard.
The Terriers ended the first half with a 12-4 advantage in shots and 7-1 lead in corners. During the next 45 minutes of action, BU was limited to just two corners, but Lansing still needed seven saves to head to overtime.
With the two conference rivals competing in their fourth overtime contest against each other, the intensity picked up in the final 20 minutes of action. Gilbert recorded a pair of saves against Thorsheim and Justin Galiani at 90:48 and 96:17, respectively.
Gilbert had a save last Thursday against Harvard and almost added his second of the week when he sent a booming kick toward Bucknell's box in the 104th minute. Senior Lucas McBride was in position to collect the pass on the run but was hounded by a Bucknell defender and had his attempt stopped with a defenseless keeper in front.
Lansing made the final save with a catch of McBride's header at 104:50. The Terriers ended the game ahead in both shots, 28-9, and corner kicks, 11-2.
They will conclude their three-game homestand against UMass Lowell in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday (Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. in the first meeting between the two in-state schools since 1981.
