BOSTON--The best start to the season coupled with four players in double-figure scoring led to the Boston University women's basketball team's first win of the season, a 63-59 result against American on Wednesday night in Case Gym.
BU (1-15, 1-4 PL) scored the first 10 points of the game to set the pace for the victory in a game where the Terriers never trailed. The win marked the first victory over American (4-12, 2-3 PL) as conference opponents and gave BU its first win of the season.
Kara Sheftic led the team for the third-straight game, finishing with 15 points. Three other Terriers joined her in double-figure scoring, the first time BU has achieved this benchmark since last season against Holy Cross.
Corrine Williams went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field including a 3-pointer to finish with 13 points while Sarah Hope hit three from long range and a pair of late free throws to finish with 11 points. Meghan Green rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points on the night.
BU had its best shooting percentage of the season, going 24-of-51 from the floor for a 47.1 percent showing. American also had success from the field, shooting 40.4 percent overall and 39.1 percent (9-of-23) from long range.
The Terriers started the game on a tear, scoring the first 10 points of the game to match their largest lead of the season in the first three minutes of the quarter. In total, BU finished the period with a 16-9 lead, the most points the Terriers have scored in a first quarter so far this season.
Latham and Sheftic led the way in the first quarter with four points apiece. Their efforts were aided by Williams, who totaled two steals in the first 10 minutes while Latham assisted on three baskets and Sheftic blocked two shots.
Neither team put together a strong offense throughout the first half of the second quarter but BU steadily scored to regain its 10-point lead following a Payton Hauck fastbreak layup with 3:30 to play in the first half.
American turned it into high gear after that, however, scoring on five straight possessions including four makes from beyond the arc to tie the game at 31-31 going into halftime.
BU scored the first points of the second half to prevent American from taking a lead, which the Eagles would never do for the remainder of the game. The pair went back and forth for the majority of the quarter but BU finished the period on a 7-2 run to take a seven-point advantage going into the final quarter.
The Terriers continued to build their lead throughout the fourth quarter and led by nine points with just over one minute left to play. American wasn't done yet, however, and went on a 9-1 run to make it a one-point game with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
A pair of misses in the Eagles' offensive end allowed BU to maintain the lead and the Terriers came away with their first victory of the season.
