BOSTON -
Sarah Hope's outside shot and Kara Sheftic's inside presence was almost too much for the Lehigh women's basketball team to handle but the Mountain Hawks slipped away with a 73-66 win on BU's home court Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers (0-13, 0-2 PL) went on a 20-5 run over seven and a half minutes during the fourth quarter and did not allow Lehigh (8-5, 1-1 PL) to score any field goals during that time but it wasn't enough to make up for an early deficit.
Hope was perfect from the floor, going 6-for-6 overall and 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, helping the Terriers make their comeback attempt. She finished with 18 points, with her only miss coming on a free throw.
Sheftic dominated the paint, scoring 15 points, just two shy of her career high. Her 10 points from the field were all power moves to the basket and she had success drawing fouls and got 10 chances from the free throw line.
Meghan Green was also a consistent inside threat for the Terriers, finishing the game with 13 points and six rebounds. This was the first game BU had three players score in double figures.
BU was consistent from the field throughout the game, finishing with a 44.1 shooting percentage, bolstered by a 70 percent showing (7-for-10) from beyond the arc. Lehigh also found success from long range, going 9-for-22 (40.9 percent). The Mountain Hawks shot 39.3 percent overall.
The Terriers dominated the paint, outscoring Lehigh 34-22 including 12 points in the fourth quarter. BU also had the edge on rebounds, 38-37.
The Terriers kept the game close throughout the first quarter with their excellent defense. Courtney Latham found her jumpshot early and scored four of BU's first six points. Lehigh started to put a run together late in the period, however, and ultimately finished the quarter with a 17-9 advantage.
Lehigh's Jordan could not miss from long range, hitting two 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions early in the second quarter, putting the Mountain Hawks ahead by 12 points. She went into halftime going 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.
The Terriers found their stride midway through the quarter, however, and went on a 6-0 run. Clodagh Scannell hit a layup and Hope immediately stole the ball and found Sheftic, who layed it in to cut the Lehigh lead to 33-16. Sheftic rebounded a rare Mountain Hawk miss from long range and followed it up with another strong move to the basket to get within 15 points. BU kept pace for the remainder of the period and went into halftime with a 40-26 deficit.
BU kept pace with Lehigh for the third quarter but couldn't cut into the Mountain Hawk lead and had a tall task ahead going into the final 10 minutes.
BU turned it into high gear in the final period, which the team went into with a 59-41 deficit. Hope hit a three to open fourth quarter scoring and the Terriers allowed Lehigh to score just one field goal for the first 8:30 of the period. BU went on an 8-0 run after an early Mountain Hawk layup to gain momentum and begin its comeback attempt.
The Terriers brought the game within four points thanks to a 16-3 run that included only points off of free throws for Lehigh due to an incredible defensive effort. BU kept battling and, with 45 seconds remaining, cut the Mountain Hawk lead to just two points. Ultimately, the Terriers had to resort to fouling and were unable to convert on the offensive end, leading to the seven-point loss.
BU is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 7 when the Terriers take their first conference road trip of the season to Navy for a 7 p.m. game with the Midshipmen.
