Williams, Latham Lead Terriers Past UMass Lowell, 66-56

BOSTON – Led by career highs of 19 points by junior guard Corrine Williams and 17 points from senior guard Courtney Latham, the Boston University women's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell, 66-56, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym for its first win of the season.

TURNING POINT

  • With BU leading the River Hawks 25-16 at halftime, Williams scored six-straight points to open the second half, finishing with a steal and a layup to stretch the BU lead to 31-16.
  • BU extended the lead to 19 points when sophomore forward Naiyah Thompson hit a layup to make the score, 40-21 BU, with 3:39 left in the third period.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers led 12-10 after the first 10 minutes thanks to Williams who went 2-for-2 from behind the arc for six first-quarter points to go along with three rebounds.
  • Sophomore guard Lauren Spearman scored on a nifty reverse layup then nailed a jumper for back-to-back buckets to extend the BU lead to 25-16 at the half.
  • Latham went 5-7 from the floor (71.4%) and 7-9 from the free-throw line (77.8%) for her career high 17 points. The Glastonbury, Conn. native broke her career high with her 15th point on a free throw after a layup and a foul with 2:20 to go, making it 60-43 BU.
  • Williams shot 7-11 from the floor (63.6%), 2-2 from 3-point range and 3-4 from the charity stripe to account for her 19 points. The Bloomfield, Conn. native also added seven rebounds.
  • UMass Lowell freshman guard Megan Hendrick kept things close with 15 points off the bench, matching her career high.
  • Junior forward Kayla Gibbs added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the River Hawks
GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's game was BU's "Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer" game, which supported the Go4theGoal Foundation in helping kids with cancer. The student-athletes wore Gold Laces during the game, while the coaches wore gold ribbons to support children battling cancer and to raise awareness for the cause. Donations were collected at the game and were donated directly to the Go4theGoal Foundation.
  • Lowell won the battle on the boards by a wide margin, 41-25.
  • BU edged the River Hawks in shooting percentage, 45.3% to 42%. UML went 9-12 (75%) from the free throw line while BU went 15-24 (62.5%).
  • BU shot 3-11 (27.3%) from three point distance while UML went 5-12 (41.7%).
NEXT UP: NEW HAMPSHIRE
  • The Terriers will conclude their three-game home stand on Monday night (Nov. 28) against New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
  • Last year, UNH won, 69-52, in Durham, N.H.
