Terriers Come Back to Defeat UMass, 64-60

BOSTON – Led by seniors Sarah Hope and Meghan Green, who each scored 16 points, the Boston University women's basketball team defeated UMass, 64-60, on Wednesday night at Case Gym. Trailing by as many as six points in the fourth quarter and 11 in the first half, the Terriers went on a 9-2 run to close out the game and claim their second win of the season in thrilling fashion.

THE FINAL STRETCH

  • Down by three (58-55) with 3:23 left in regulation, BU exchanged turnovers with the Minutewomen before sophomore Naiyah Thompson fed senior Sarah Hope for a game-tying 3-pointer at 2:46.
  • Thompson then grabbed a defensive rebound following junior Sophie Beaudry's career-tying sixth block and drove to the hoop for a layup that gave the Terriers the lead for good.
  • UMass pulled within one (61-60) at 34 seconds on two free throws, but BU hit a free throw and grabbed the offensive rebound to set up two more free throw attempts.
  • The Minutewomen missed their final five field goal attempts for the loss. 
THE SETUP
  • Both teams were held below 30 percent shooting in the first quarter, as UMass went 4-of-18, while the Terriers shot 2--of-8. UMass held a big advantage on the glass, 14-4, to build an 11-6 lead after one.
  • UMass extended its lead to 16-6 after freshman Hailey Leidel hit a three with 8:52 to play in the half. BU then went on a 7-2 spurt that was keyed by Hope's three pointer that cut the lead to 18-13 at 6:22.
  • Freshman guard Ryan Holder's nine points in the second quarter (11 in the first half) gave UMass a 28-19 lead into the locker room.
  • In the second half, senior Meghan Green capped a 10-4 BU run with a 3-pointer to cut the UMass lead to 34-31 with 5:49 to go in the third quarter, forcing a timeout.
  • Green and Hope each had seven points in the third, but UMass still led, 47-41, due to hitting 13 free throws on 17 attempts.
  • Down 51-45, Green hit a tough bucket in the paint and added the free throw to cut the deficit to 51-48. Thompson then made back-to-back buckets to give BU its first lead (52-51) with 6:57 to play since early in the first quarter.
GAME NOTES
  • The final quarter had five lead changes, but BU pulled ahead thanks to 8-of-13 shooting (61.5%) in the fourth and outscored UMass, 23-13.
  • BU snapped a two-game losing streak in the series to UMass and has now won seven of the last nine meetings at home.
  • UMass finished 23-of-29 (79.3%) from the free throw line, but only had two attempts in the fourth quarter, while BU shot 12-of-18 (66.7%)
  • UMass led the Terriers in rebounding, 38-32, and owned a slight 26-22 advantage in points in the paint.
  • UMass was held to its second-worst shooting percentage of the season at 30.9 FG% (17-of-55), as BU held an opponent below 35 percent for the first time this year.
  • The Terriers doubled UMass in made 3-pointers, 6-3, as Hope hit four to move within one of the 200 milestone.
  • Beaudry had a season-high and career-tying six blocks to help the Terriers finish with a season-high nine blocks, three more than the previous high.
NEXT UP: HOLY CROSS
  • After focusing on finals and celebrating the holidays with an extended two-week break, the Terriers will be back on the road on Friday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Worcester to take on Holy Cross at 1 p.m. in the Patriot League opener for both squads.
  • The contest will also mark the first winter matchup between the two schools in the Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition. Reigning champion BU owns a 4-1 lead following the fall sports schedule with wins by men's soccer, women's soccer, men's cross country and field hockey.
