FAIRFIELD, Conn. -
Led by senior Jenny Thompson's career-best five-goal game, the Boston University women's lacrosse team tallied its first win of the season at reigning MAAC champion Fairfield on Saturday afternoon.
Head coach Liz Robertshaw earned her 100th career victory as well, improving her all-time record to 100-68, all of which were recorded at BU.
The senior class shined against the Stags, as Ally Adams had a stellar day with four goals, an assist and a career-high five draw controls in addition to Thompson's five goals. Jill Horka had a dominant day in the midfield, finishing with five ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls. Mallory Collins rounded out senior standouts as she finished the day with two goals and an assist.
The Terriers scored the first goal of the game and, despite two tie scores, never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the contest. Mickenzie Larivee was the first to get on the board for the Terriers, who were chased by the Stags for most of the first half until BU was able to begin to pad its lead just before halftime.
BU scored three goals in the final 1:30 of the first period to go into halftime with a 7-4 advantage. Adams was a key threat throughout the first half as she scored three of her four goals in the first thirty minutes of the game.
The Terriers began the second half the way they ended the first, scoring a pair of quick goals to make it a 9-4 advantage. Collins had a hand in each of the goals, scoring the first and assisting on the second. Thompson scored three of her five throughout the second half to keep Fairfield at an arms length and the Terriers cruised through the final 30 minutes to earn their first win of the season.
BU out-shot the Stags, 36-23 and won 16 of 22 draw controls. In her first career start, Christine Laible made 10 saves to help the Terriers stay on top.
The Terriers are back in action on Wednesday when they head to Amherst, Mass. to take on Massachusetts in McGuirk Stadium. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. against the Minutewomen.
