AMHERST, Mass. - Despite a strong showing in the second half, the Boston University could not overcome Massachusetts' fast start to the game and dropped an 11-8 decision on a rainy Wednesday evening on Garber Field.

The Terriers (1-2) outscored the Minutewomen (3-0), 4-2, in the second half and showed their defensive prowess throughout the final 30 minutes but it was ultimately not enough to overcome the early 5-0 UMass advantage.

Christine Laible was the anchor of the UMass defense, making seven saves on the day. Sofia Robins and Talley Perkins also had strong performances as Robins caused three turnovers and grabbed two ground balls and Perkins forced four possession changes.

The game was dictated by turnovers for both teams, as they combined for 45 due to the very wet conditions. The Terriers also struggled to clear the ball, converting just 14-of-24 times.

Four Terriers finished with two points on the day as Remy Nolan and Mickenzie Larivee scored two goals, Kelly Mathews collected her first career goal and assist and Jill Horka finished with a pair of helpers.

Massachusetts started the game off with five goals in the first 12 minutes of the game to jump out to a lead that BU would ultimately not be able to recover from. BU began to fight back midway though the first half as Caroline English and Molly Kern scored within 10 seconds of each other to cut the deficit to three goals.

The pair exchanged goals for the remainder of the period and the Terriers went into halftime with a 9-4 deficit.

BU scored the first goal of the second half and held the Minutewomen scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the period. The Terriers went on a three-goal run to come within two goals, 10-8, but their momentum wasn't enough to even the score and UMass came away with the 11-8 win.

The Terriers are back in action on Tuesday, March 1 when they head to Dartmouth for a matinee with the Big Green at 3 p.m.
