AMHERST, Mass. - Boosted by goals on three of its first six shots, the No. 9 Boston University men's ice hockey team stretched its win streak to five games with a 6-3 road victory against Massachusetts on Friday evening at Mullins Center.
Freshman Jordan Greenway had his first two-goal game and 10 others Terriers also found the scoresheet with senior Danny O'Regan and sophomore Chase Phelps each recording a goal and an assist.
Freshman Oskar Andren scored his first collegiate goal and senior Mike Moran also found the back of the net for BU, which improves to 16-7-4 overall and 9-4-3 in Hockey East play.
UMass scored twice on the power play and got goals from three different players. The Minutemen now stand at 7-17-4 with a 2-12-4 conference mark.
The Terriers, who went 1-of-3 on the power play, finished with a 34-33 shot advantage and got 30 saves from senior Sean Maguire. UMass starter Henry Dill was pulled after allowing two goals on the first three shots. Nic Renyard played the remainder of the game and made 27 saves.
Greenway scored on the first shot of the night, giving BU a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the proceedings. Assists on the goal came from sophomore Brandon Hickey and senior Ahti Oksanen.
Less than two minutes later, Phelps doubled the early lead off helpers from junior Tommy Kelley and senior captain Matt Grzelcyk. Moran continued the barrage, converting off a give-and-go with Phelps off a rush at the 4:49 mark.
UMass got on the board 7:04 into the contest with a power-play marker from Ray Pigozzi. A whistle that was blown before the puck went in was ruled inadvertent after a video review.
Andrén reestablished a three-goal cushion from the Terriers when a pass from O'Regan made its way to him in the slot with 53 seconds left in the opening stanza.
O'Regan gave BU its biggest lead of the night with the lone goal of the second period. On a power play, freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson threw a puck towards the net from the left circle and it went off O'Regan and in at the 12:30 mark. Oksanen picked up his second assist on the night on the goal.
The Minutemen scored twice within a minute to kick off the third-period scoring, getting a power-play marker from Dominic Trento before Joseph Widmar used his first collegiate goal to cut the Terriers' lead to 5-3.
That's as close as the home team would get, however, as Greenway put the finishing touches on the win with an unassisted goal with 7:50 left in regulation.
BU will return to action on Monday (Feb. 8) when it takes on archrival and fourth-ranked Boston College in the championship game of the 64th Beanpot on NESN and TSN. Game time at TD Garden is set for 7:30 p.m.
