WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The second-half comeback attempt fell short for the Boston University women's basketball team and the Terriers ended their season with a 61-53 loss at American in the Patriot League Tournament First Round on Saturday afternoon in Bender Arena.
Meghan Green led the team with 17 points while Troi Melton was a spark on both sides of the ball, finishing with 10 points and five steals.
BU fought hard in the second half to makeup for an 11-point halftime deficit but its fourth quarter surge, which got the Terriers within four points on multiple occasions, was not enough to overcome the differential.
Melton was key in the comeback attempt, netting eight points and making four steals in the second half. Green also had a strong second half showing, totaling nine points, three offensive rebounds, a block and an assist in the final 20 minutes.
Second chance points were troublesome for the Terriers, as the Eagles outscored BU, 20-5, on points from offensive rebounds. In total, American out rebounded BU, 38-28, 19 of which were on offense.
The Terriers got off to a strong start, winning the opening tip and scoring the first points of the game but American quickly found its stride and took the lead less than three minutes into the game and did not relinquish it.
BU began its battle early in the third quarter when the Eagles took their largest lead of the contest, 32-19. The Terriers won the quarter, 15-11, which cut the American advantage to seven points.
It looked like the tables were turning on the Eagles in the middle of the fourth when the Terriers had a two-possession differential but American came up with the victory in the end.
