On Monday, a group from Boston University athletics volunteered at the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), sorting non perishable food to be distributed to those in need. The community outreach was part of the university's "Global Days of Service" initiative.

The group from BU athletics arrived at GBFB's South Bay facility at 9:30 a.m. and got to work sorting huge quantities of food. For over two hours the group helped sort over 12,000 pounds worth of food and made more than 10,050 meals possible.

"Today was a great opportunity to assist those in need of food and help a wonderful organization like the Greater Boston Food Bank," said BU's director of athletics Drew Marrochello who volunteered on Monday. "It is always important for BU Athletics to get out into the Boston community and volunteer, especially for a great cause like fighting hunger."

Founded in 1981, the GBFB's objective is to distribute enough food to provide at least one meal a day to those in need. The GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. Last year, it distributed 48 million pounds of food, enough to provide healthy meals to as many as 545,000 people.

Organized by BU's Office of Alumni Relations and The Community Service Center, BU's Global Day of Service initiative has encouraged over 9,000 people to volunteer over the past three years and has quickly become a new BU tradition. During last April alone, over 4,000 BU Global Day of Service volunteers performed over 25,000 hours of service in over 15 countries around the world.
