Irving Leads Late BU Comeback in 69-64 Stunner at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Trailing by 15 points late in the fourth quarter, the Boston University women's basketball team completed a furious comeback with a 23-3 run over the closing minutes to earn a 69-64 road win at Lehigh on Monday afternoon. The Terriers were led by freshman Nia Irving, who had a season-high 26 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

THE TURNING POINT

  • Facing a 61-46 deficit with 4:55 to play following a Lehigh 3-pointer from Camryn Buhr, freshman Nia Irving ignited the game-ending 23-3 run with six straight points off four consecutive free throws and a layup at 4:04.
  • The Terriers used a pair of 3-point plays, a trey from sophomore Naiyah Thompson and a converted layup plus free throw from junior Sophie Beaudry, to help tie the game, 64-64, at 1:27.
  • On the ensuing possession, Beaudry recorded her second block of the contest, and Irving next gave BU the lead for good at 28 seconds by hitting a layup after she grabbed BU's 14th offensive rebound.   
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU led, 9-5, in the early going behind four points from Thompson, but Lehigh went on a 7-0 run and eventually ended the first quarter ahead, 12-11.
  • The Mountain Hawks used two 3-pointers from Kayla Burton to extend the lead to 29-20 with 2:14 to play in the first half. Quinci Mann led the Mountain Hawks with seven points in the first half, as the teams entered the locker rooms with BU trailing, 31-22.
  • Senior Courtney Latham hit a 10-footer to make it a 34-26 game, but Lehigh responded with a 7-2 run to push the lead to 41-28 with five minutes to play in the third, forcing BU to call a timeout.
  • Lehigh extended its lead to 17 points (47-30) when Quinci Mann hit a layup at 1:37 in the third.
  • BU entered the final frame trailing 47-32 but would outscore Lehigh 37-17 in the final quarter.
  • Trailing by two (66-64), Lehigh missed a 3-point attempt with 14 seconds left and a contested layup at six seconds. Thompson and Latham combined for the final three free throws to seal the thrilling come-from-behind victory.
GAME NOTES
  • BU scored 37 points in the fourth quarter alone after scoring 32 points in the first three quarters combined. The Terriers' previous high in a quarter this year was 24 in the first quarter of Friday's win at Holy Cross (66-49).
  • The Terriers shot 11-of-16 (68.8 FG%) from the field and 14-of-15 (93.3 FT%) at the line in the fourth to finish 25-of-66 (37.9 FG%) and 17-of-22 (77.3 FT%), respectively.
  • BU owned a 38-24 advantage in points from the paint and opened conference play with two consecutive wins for the first time since 2012-13.
  • Courney Latham (10 points) missed a double-double by one rebound, while Thompson was just two points and one rebound shy.
  • Both Beaudry and Irving went 7-of-12 from the field, but Irving finished 12-of-13 at the charity stripe to outscore her teammate, 26-16.
  • Thompson and Irving tallied three steals apiece to help BU finish with 11 total.
  • BU had the advantage in rebounding, 46-38.
  • The Terriers snapped a five-game losing streak to a Lehigh squad that was selected to finish second in the Patriot League preseason poll and are now even in the all-time series, 5-5.

  • BU will next begin a two-game homestand by hosting Navy on Friday (Jan. 6) at Case Gym with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
