PARKING ADVISORY
BOSTON - Looking to rebound from a sweep at the hands of Merrimack, the No. 1/2 Boston University men's ice hockey team hosts No. 7 UMass Lowell on Saturday (Jan. 28) in the first meeting of the season between the two schools. Saturday's contest, which starts at 7 p.m., closes out a stretch of five games in nine days and is the middle of a three-game homestand.
Saturday will be the team's annual Austism Awareness Night and a Chuck-a-Puck will take place in the second intermission with proceeds going to Autism Speaks.
TO THE TOP
• For the first time in over two years, Boston University sits atop one of the national polls.
• The Terriers are No. 1 in the USCHO.com poll following a three-win week that featured a shutout win at archrival Boston College and a home-and-home sweep of Maine.
• BU moved up two spots in both polls as they are No. 2 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
SERIES HISTORY
• Boston University is 72-28-9 (.702) in 109 all-time meetings with the River Hawks.
• Lowell, however, is 9-4-1 in the past 14 meetings and 10 of BU's 28 losses in the all-time series have occurred since the start of the 2011-12 season.
• The teams split their regular-season series last year with each team winning at home. They later faced off in the Hockey East quarterfinals, where Lowell posted a sweep with scores of 3-2 and 5-0.
• BU is 10-6-3 (.605) in the 19 meetings that have taken place at Agganis Arena.
• The Terriers and River Hawks have met in the Hockey East playoffs in three of the past four seasons, including the 2013 and 2015 league title games.
• In 14 overtime games, BU is 5-0-9 against Lowell.
SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
• UMass Lowell has dropped its last three contests - all by a single goal - after winning seven straight games.
• The River Hawks are currently tied for fifth in the Hockey East standings with UNH at 15 points (7-6-1).
• UMass Lowell is an impressive 9-4-1 in road games this season.
• The River Hawks' power-play unit ranks second in the nation, operating at a 26.2-percent success rate.
• Senior Joe Gambardella ranks first on the team in both points (35) and assists (24) while junior C.J. Smith has added 28 points, including a team-best 13 goals.
• Senior Dylan Zink ranks fourth nationally amongst defensemen in points per game at 0.92 with an 8-16--24 scoring line.
• Freshman Tyler Wall has made an immediate impact in goal for Lowell and currently sports a .920 save percentage and 2.10 goals-against average.
TERRIERS TRIPPED UP BY MERRIMACK
• Boston University had its eight-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday evening in a 3-1 setback at Merrimack.
• The Warriors then completed their first-ever season sweep of the Terriers on Friday with a 4-1 win at Agganis Arena.
• On Tuesday, Merrimack overcame an early BU goal by scoring once each period en route to its first win over a top-ranked team since it upset the Terriers in the 1998 Hockey East quarterfinals.
• Freshman Chad Krys opened the scoring for the Terriers in what would be their lone goal of the game.
• BU is now winless in its past four trips (0-3-1) to Lawler Rink.
• On Friday, Brett Seney scored Merrimack's first two goals, including the go-ahead tally at 12:51 of the middle period. Michael Babcock also scored two goals, including a key shorthanded marker, for the visitors.
• Freshman Clayton Keller answered an early Merrimack power-play with one of his own in the early stages. It was his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
LAST SEASON VS. THE RIVER HAWKS
• Boston University and Lowell split their regular-season series last season with the home team winning each game.
• On Feb. 12, an overtime goal by Jordan Greenway gave BU a 2-1 win at Agganis Arena. The following night, the River Hawks earned a 6-3 home win.
• The teams later met in the Hockey East quarterfinals, where fourth-seeded Lowell swept the fifth-seeded Terriers, 3-2 and 5-0, at Tsongas Center.
IT'S NOT EASY BEING ONE
• During the last five instances in which the Terriers entered a week ranked No. 1 in one of the two national polls, they are a combined 2-5-3 in games that took place those weeks.
• BU has fallen from the top spot the following week each of the four previous times.
• Merrimack is now 3-0-2 in the past five meetings in which BU is ranked No. 1.
KELLER, OETTINGER HONORED
• After leading Boston University to a three-win week, freshmen Clayton Keller and Jake Oettinger each earned their fourth Hockey East weekly honor of the season on Monday.
• Keller was named Rookie of the Week after tallying five points (2g, 3a) and a plus-3 rating over the course of the three wins. He recorded a goal and an assist in both ends of a home-and-home sweep against Maine after earning an assist in a shutout win at Boston College.
• Oettinger, the Defensive Player of the Week, was dominant in goal, posting a 3-0-0 record, 0.67 GAA and .973 save percentage on the week, highlighted by a 34-save shutout against archrival Boston College.
WHO'S HOT?
• Freshman Clayton Keller has 19 points (8g, 11a) during his current 11-game point streak, which is the longest by a Terrier since Jack Eichel put together a 14-game streak from Feb. 6 – March 27, 2015.
• Sophomores Jordan Greenway (8 games - 1g, 8a) and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (7 games - 7g, 4a) had lengthy point streaks come to an end on Tuesday.
• Sophomore Bobo Carpenter has had a hand in the game-winning goal in five of BU's past seven wins (2g, 3a) and had a career-best six-game point streak come to an end last Saturday.
EVEN STRENGTH A STRENGTH
• The Terriers have allowed just three even-strength goals over their past six games.
• Jake Oettinger went a span of 273:17 without giving up an even-strength goal over four-plus starts up until Merrimack's eventual game-winner on Friday night.
JFK HEATS UP
• After scoring five goals in two games, sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson claimed Warrior Hockey East Player of the Week honors on Jan. 9.
• In the second-half opener on Jan. 5, Forsbacka Karlsson recorded his first collegiate hat trick, including the game-tying and overtime goals, in a 5-4 victory over No. 10 Union.
• He then scored the first two goals in the Terriers' 5-3 win over UMass at Frozen Fenway.
• The Swedish pivot now second on the team in both points (24) and goals (10).
• His final goal against UMass marked the 50th point of his collegiate career.
TERRIER TIDBITS
• Sophomore Jordan Greenway is the only current Terrier who has scored a goal against UMass Lowell at Agganis Arena.
• Greenway has a team-best three game-winning goals this season.
• Of BU's top 11 point-scorers this season, 10 have at least one power-play goal.
• The Terriers have scored first in nine of their past 11 games. .
• Thirty-two of BU's 77 goals thus far have come in the third period.
• Senior captain Doyle Somerby has a team-best plus-11 rating.
• Five of BU's wins this season have been shutouts, and for the first time in the Terriers' 95-season history, they blanked their first three home opponents.
