Terriers Edged by Navy, 62-59

BOSTON - Senior Sarah Hope matched a career high with seven 3-pointers, but the Boston University women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 62-59 decision to Navy on Friday night at Case Gym.

THE TURNING POINT
  • Trailing by one with less than a minute to play, Navy secured a key offensive rebound and then hit a jumper with 27 seconds to play to take a 60-59 lead.
  • BU had two different chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but a strong defensive effort from Navy kept BU from winning its fourth straight contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU scored the first four points of the game, but Navy followed with a 10-0 run and eventually earned a 23-15 lead after the opening quarter.
  • The Mids led at halftime, 38-27, but BU opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run that was capped by sophomore Naiyah Thompson's three-point play to cut the Navy lead to one at 40-39.
  • BU ultimately outscored the Mids, 20-8, in the third frame to take a 47-46 lead into the final 10 minutes thanks to an 8-of-13 (57.1%) performance from the floor.
  • Sophomore Payton Hauck opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to give the Terriers a three-point lead, and freshman Nia Irving scored the next six points to keep the Terriers in front.
  • Navy eventually grabbed a one-point edge, but Hope's seventh trey of the game from well beyond the arc pushed BU back ahead, 59-57, with 2:52 to play.
  • The Mids hit a free throw and then finally got the lead for good with the aforementioned jumper.
GAME NOTES
  • In addition to matching her career high with seven 3-pointers, Hope finished with 21 points, two shy of her career best of 23.
  • Hope also moved into sole possession of third place for career threes at BU; she now has 211 3-pointers over her terrific career.
  • Junior Sophie Beaudry finished with her second career double-double thanks to 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The Terriers shot an impressive 61.5% from three-point range, going 8-of-13. It was the first time they shot above 50-percent from beyond the arc since a 53.8-percent showing at Colgate on Feb. 17, 2016.
  • Thompson also reached double figures with 10 points and also recorded seven boards.
  • BU outrebounded the Mids, 44-32. It's the third straight game that the Terriers have collected over 40 rebounds.
