DERBY, Conn. - Highlighted by a first-place finish by the novice eight boat and a fifth-place finish by the varsity four boat, the Boston University women's lightweight rowing team opened its fall season at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Competing against openweight competition, the BU lightweight varsity eight boat, coxed junior Taylor Alix and stroked by junior Janice Hagerman, finished ninth with a time of 14:19.6 in a field of 23 boats. The Terriers' second varsity eight boat finished in 17th in the same race.
• The Terriers' novice eight boat finished first in its race in a field of four. The novice eight, stroked by freshman Izzy Bichler, finished with a time of 15:47.5, ahead of crews from Fordham, Coast Guard and West Point.
• Later in the day, the BU varsity four, coxed by freshman Antonella Kugler and stroked by senior Gemma Junkinsmith, finished fifth in its race with a time of 16:07.0. In the same race, the BU 4+ B finished eighth (16:39.3) and the BU 4+C finished 11^th (17:19.3).
• In twos racing, junior Janice Hagerman and freshman Annie Phillips finished second with a time of 16:52.6 in a field of 12 boats. In the same race, sophomore Sarah Maietta and classmate Riona McCormick finished fifth (17:00.4).

UP NEXT

• The Terriers will now prepare for the 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 21 and 22 with the DeWolfe Boathouse once again serving as the official starting line.
