Terriers Edged by No. 13/17 BC, 13-11

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Junior Avery Donahoe and senior Elisabeth Jayne each recorded a hat trick and senior Caroline Meegan made a career-high 17 saves, but the Boston University women's lacrosse team was defeated by No. 13/17 Boston College, 13-11, on Wednesday afternoon in the Terriers' season opener.

CAREER DAYS

  • Meegan was outstanding for the Terriers on Wednesday, stopping 17 shots including 10 in the first half to send the teams to the break tied, 7-7.
  • BC had several chances to open up its lead in the second half but Meegan continued her terrific day, keeping BC to a 1-of-7 mark on free-position chances in the final 30 minutes.
  • Jayne scored the first three goals of her collegiate career on Wednesday and added her first two assists as a Terrier for a five-point afternoon.
  • Donahoe matched her career high for goals with three and added an assist to match her career high for points with four.
  • Senior Taylor Hardison notched four assists to match her single-game high.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After BC opened the scoring, BU took a 2-1 lead just 4:58 into the proceedings thanks to goals from Donahoe and Jayne.
  • The Eagles scored the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead before sophomore Tonianne Magnelli answered with her first collegiate goal with 16:51 left in the half.
  • BC quickly responded to take a 5-3 lead, but Donahoe and sophomore Kelly Mathews both scored to tie the game, 5-5, with 7:00 left in the first half.
  • BU erased another two-goal deficit to secure a 7-7 score line at the break. Sophomore Molly Kern made it 7-6 before Jayne's second of the day tied the game; both goals were assisted by senior Taylor Hardison.
  • The Eagles never trailed in the second half, scoring four of the first five goals of the stanza. Donahoe's third goal of the contest kept BU close at 9-8 before the Eagles took an 11-8 advantage.
  • Junior Sarah Andersen cut the BC lead to 11-9 at the midpoint of the half before the Eagles answered to retake a three-goal edge.
  • It became a one-goal game late in the second half thanks to goals from Jayne and freshman Mackenzie Howe. Howe's marker, the first of her collegiate career, cut the Eagle lead to 12-11.
  • BC responded with another goal to make it 13-11 with 4:44 to play and was able to keep the Terrier offense off the board for the remainder of the contest.

GAME NOTES

  • BU caused 10 of the Eagles' 20 turnovers, with junior Maria Guerra leading the Terriers with two caused turnovers.
  • Seven different Terriers found the back of the net and eight different players had at least one point.
  • Jayne and sophomore Kaitlin Belval each recorded two ground balls.
  • In addition to her 17 stops, Meegan also forced one turnover and collected a ground ball.
  • Five freshmen made their collegiate debuts for BU - Howe, Kailey Conry, Lexi Lewis, Katie DeFreitas and Maggie Lohrer.
