Terriers Finish Third at Patriot League Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Highlighted by junior Garrett Chin's runner-up finish and freshman Tommy Haggerty's school-record performance, the Boston University men's swimming & diving team concluded the Patriot League Championships on Saturday evening at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. 

The Terriers had a combined nine top-eight finishes on the final day to finish third overall in the team standings at 498.5. Navy defended its title with 846 points, ahead of runner-up Army (786). No. 4 Bucknell (429), No. 5 Lehigh (343.5), No. 6 Loyola Maryland (234), No. 7 Colgate (154), No. 8 Holy Cross (131), No. 9 American (108) and No. 10 Lafayette rounded out the list.

Sophomore Trevor Winans, who broke two school records during the week, was named Turnpike Trophy MVP for helping the Terriers place ahead of Holy Cross in the final standings with a combined five top-eight finishes in individual and relay freestyle races. BU now leads the Crusaders, 8-1, in the all-sports competition, as the BU women also boasted a higher score than Holy Cross.

Hagerty opened the night for the men by placing fourth in the 1650 with a time of 15:37.10, topping the previous record of 15:38.44 held by Tyson Slesnick ('10). Sophomore Judson Balding took eighth in the same race at 16:02.32.

Chin boasted the highest finish of the night for the Terriers by placing second in the 200 back at 1:45.41 with Bucknell's Chris Devlin winning at 1:43.86. Sophomore Michael Choate took fourth in the same race at 1:47.20.

Winans placed eighth in the 100 free, and senior Daniel Andronov recorded the same result in the 200 breast at 2:01.70. Junior Chris Downing just missed out on competing in the A final alongside Andronov but came back to win the B final at 2:02.27 for a ninth-place overall result.

In diving, BU had three men record top eight finishes with sophomore Cameron Schoffstall posting a score of 289.30. for fifth place. Junior Eric Mitchell and sophomore David Thiede took sixth and eighth, respectively.

The Terriers ended the competition by placing fourth in the 400 free relay with a combined time of 3:00.57 set by Winans, sophomore Matt Traub, senior Brian Habacivch and junior Quinn Smith
