BOSTON - After posting seven January wins for the first time since the 2008-09 NCAA title season, the No. 3/3 Boston University men's ice hockey team kicks off February on Friday (Feb. 3) with a home game against Massachusetts. Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
The teams met four weeks ago at Frozen Fenway with the Terriers earning a 5-3 victory. Friday's game marks the end of a three-game homestand, which is the longest of the season for BU.
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS
• The Terriers are 8-2-0 in their past 10 games and their recent eight-game win streak was its longest since one of the same length at the end of the 2014-15 season.
• BU won its first six January contests for the first time since 1977-78, the season the team captured the program's third national title.
SERIES HISTORY
• Since their first game on Jan. 16, 1920, the Terriers and Minutemen have played 76 times. BU holds an impressive 60-11-6 (.818) record over UMass.
• BU is undefeated in the past nine meetings (8-0-1) with wins in each of the past seven. The Terriers are 15-2-3 against the Minutemen since the beginning of 2010.
• The teams have met 64 times in Hockey East play and the Terriers hold a 48-10-6 (.797) advantage in those contests.
• BU holds a 4-1-6 (.636) edge in the 11 overtime contests in the series. All five shutouts between these teams have been recorded by the Terriers.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEMEN
• Massachusetts has dropped 13 of its 14 contests since earning a 5-4 win over Notre Dame on Dec. 2.
• Most recently, UMass came up just short in a 6-5 home loss to Northeastern on Tuesday.
• The Minutemen are currently 12th in the Hockey East standings with five points (2-12-1 record).
• Senior Steven Iacobellis has a team-best 16 points (7g, 9a) while sophomores Austin Plevy (5g, 9a) and Kurt Keats (5g, 8a) have added 14 and 13 points, respectively.
• Rookie Griff Jeszka (6g, 5a) and senior Ray Pigozzi (5g, 5a) are the only other Minutemen in double figures.
• Freshman Ryan Wischow has started 20 games in goal and has a .901 save percentage to go along with a 3.05 goals-against average.
AT THE BALLPARK
• The Terriers posted a 5-3 victory over Massachusetts on Jan. 8 in their third appearance at Frozen Fenway.
• Sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson scored the game's first two goals and classmate Charlie McAvoy converted on a power play at 13:52 of the middle stanza to push the lead to 3-0.
• UMass would get on the board before the end of the second, however, and then add a shorthanded goal at 8:21 of the third to make it 3-2.
• Freshmen Chad Krys and Gabriel Chabot responded by scoring 48 seconds apart to regain a three-goal edge at 5-2 before the Minutemen scored in the final minute of play.
• The Terriers held a 30-29 shot advantage and got a 26-save performance from Jake Oettinger.
• All six BU skaters who competed in the World Junior Championship recorded at least one point.
SOPHOMORES EXCEL VS. UMASS
• Sophomores Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (5-2--7), Charlie McAvoy (1-6--7), Jordan Greenway (3-3--6) and Bobo Carpenter (3-2--5) have combined for 24 points (11g, 13a) in their five games - all wins - against the Minutemen.
LAST TIME OUT
• Boston University closed out a stretch of five games in nine days with one of its strongest wins of the season, earning a 4-2 home victory over then-No. 7/ UMass Lowell on Jan. 28
• After the game stayed at a 1-1 score for over 40 minutes, Bobo Carpenter blasted a shot to the back of the net from the right circle off a feed from Clayton Keller to give the Terriers a lead they would not relinquish.
• Keller added an insurance goal off a backhand on a rush with 7:13 left in regulation.
• The River Hawks got back into the game by getting a goal from C.J. Smith with 3:03 to play and simultaneously drawing a BU penalty to have a chance to equalize on the power play.
• The Terriers' penalty kill unit was up to the task, however, and Carpenter added an empty-netter to create the 4-2 final.
• Jake Oettinger turned in an impressive 33-save performance, including a highlight-reel glove save on a shorthanded breakaway.• Carpenter matched his career highs in points (3) and goals (2).
• The River Hawks held a 35-26 shot advantage and got 22 saves from Tyler Wall.
IT'S NOT EASY BEING ONE
• During the last five instances in which the Terriers entered a week ranked No. 1 in one of the two national polls, they are a combined 3-5-3 in games that took place those weeks.
• BU has fallen from the top spot the following week all five times.
• Merrimack is now 3-0-2 in the past five meetings in which BU is ranked No. 1.
WHO'S HOT?
• Freshman Clayton Keller has 21 points (9g, 12a) during his current 13-game point streak, which is the longest by a Terrier since Jack Eichel put together a 14-game streak from Feb. 6 – March 27, 2015.
• Sophomores Jordan Greenway (8 games - 1g, 8a) and Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (7 games - 7g, 4a) had lengthy point streaks come to an end on Jan. 24 at Merrimack.
• Sophomore Bobo Carpenter has had a hand in the game-winning goal in six of BU's past eight wins (2g, 4a) and had a career-best six-game point streak come to an end on Jan. 21.
TERRIER TIDBITS
• Sophomore Jordan Greenway has a team-best three game-winning goals this season.
• Of BU's top 11 point-scorers this season, 10 have at least one power-play goal.
• The Terriers have scored first in nine of their past 12 games.
• Thirty-five of BU's 81 goals thus far have come in the third period.
• Senior captain Doyle Somerby has a team-best plus-12 rating.
• Five of BU's wins this season have been shutouts, and for the first time in the Terriers' 95-season history, they blanked their first three home opponents.
• All 23 skaters on BU's roster have scored at least one point this season.
SCORING BY CLASS
• The sophomores hold a slim 91-90 edge over the freshmen in the race for scoring by class.
• The freshmen, however, hold a 36-32 edge in goals.
