Terriers Overpower Bucknell, 13-8, in Patriot League Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Behind a career-high four goals from freshman Mackenzie Howe, the Boston University women's lacrosse team cruised to a 13-8 victory in its Patriot League opener Sunday afternoon at Graham Field.

BREAK OUT GAME FOR HOWE

  • After registering one goal over her first five games, Howe posted a breakout game with a team-high four goals.
  • The four goals from Howe were the most a BU freshman has scored this season.
  • Howe's performance marked the second straight game a freshman has lead the team in points as Kailey Conry previously tallied a team-best six points against Fairfield. 
STARTING STRONG
  • The Terriers came out firing to start each half, opening the game with a 4-0 run and started the second frame with a 6-0 streak.
  • BU's first four goals came in an eight-minute span, while its six goals to start the second came in an 11-minute flurry.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Howe started the onslaught by driving all the way from the top of the crease and roped one past the keeper to put the Terriers on the board.
  • Elizabeth Jayne scored just over a minute later before Howe put in her second off a free position shot. Mickenzie Larivee furthered the lead just 29 seconds later, pushing BU's command to 4-0 with 21:40 left in the half.
  • Bucknell roped back-to-back goals in under a minute following a timeout, reducing BU's command to two goals with 19:39 on the clock.
  • Taylor Hardison snapped the run as she scored the Terriers fifth goal with 16:45 remaining in the half, though the Bison would rope another pair of scores to come within one at 5-4 with just over 11 minutes left in the opening half.
  • Larivee pushed BU's lead back to two on a free position shot, though Bucknell made it a one-goal game again at 6-5 with four minutes left until the break.
  • Jayne and Howe pushed the lead back to three as the score held at 8-5 in favor of the Terriers heading into the locker room.
  • Howe notched her fourth goal of the game 2:46 into the second half before Tonianne Magnelli and Hardison scored within 15 second of each other. Kaitlin Belval capped the 6-0 BU four minutes later, giving BU a seven-goal cushion with 19 minutes left in regulation.
  • Bucknell roped three straight to diminish BU's command to 12-8, but Belval scored in the final seconds to lead the Terriers to their fifth straight win over the Bison.
GAME NOTES 
  • Conry's assist on Howe's opening goal was the third straight goal she had a hand in.
  • Five of the first 10 goals of the game came off free position shots.
  • Caroline Meegan finished with 12 saves, marking her fifth game of the season with double-digit stops.
  • BU was a perfect 22-of-22 on clear attempts.
  • The Terrier defense held Bucknell's Christina Manis, the Patriot League leader in assists and assists per game, to just one score and one assist.
  • The win marked BU's fifth straight win over the Bison, keeping its record unblemished against the Bison since joining the Patriot League. 
  • The Terriers improved to 4-0 all-time in Patriot League openers.
