BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior
Adela Cejnarova of the Boston University golf team became the first golfer, male or female, to win three straight Patriot League individual titles thanks to her three-shot victory at the 2017 Patriot League Women's Golf Championship.
Cejnarova finished the weekend with a score of 222, three shots better than junior
Phyllis Tang. The highlight of the tournament came during the second round in which she fired a one-under 71 to take a lead she did not relinquish. Cejnarova, the Patriot League Golfer of the Year, carded a final-round 77 and an opening-round 74 to complete her three-peat. No other golfer in the field completed a round under par.
Even more impressive is that Cejnarova now owns the three best individual scores in Patriot League Championship history. She set a new tournament record in 2015 with a 222, then broke that in 2016 with a 219. She completed her Patriot League career with an average winning score of 221.
While Cejnarova made history, the Terriers came up just short in their bid for a second conference title in three years. BU finished second to Richmond by just three strokes. Leading after Saturday's 36 holes (313-295), the Terriers combined for a score of 310 on Sunday to finish with a 918 for the tournament. Richmond finished with a 306 over the final 18 holes for a tournament total of 916 (298-312-306).
The Terriers showed terrific fight on Saturday to put themselves in contention. BU erased a 15-shot Richmond lead during the second round to take a two-shot advantage into Sunday. Â
BU golfers finished first, second and tied for third in an impressive showing. Tang came in second with a score of 225 (77-73-75) while sophomore
Megan Carter also carded a 75 on Sunday to finish tied for third with a 54-hole total of 227 (80-72-75). Cejnarova, Tang and Carter all earned First Team All-Patriot League honors. For Carter and Tang, this is each their second team earning All-Patriot League accolades.
Freshmen
Zhangcheng Guo and
Abby Parsons made their Patriot League Championship debuts this weekend, finishing 20th and 21st, respectively. Guo (82-80-83) and Parsons (84-79-83) both shot 83 on Sunday and will join Tang and Carter as returning players in 2017-18.
BU continued to make improvements on the course in 2016-17. The Terriers twice set a new 54-hole program record this spring, with the new school standard at 896. They also finished the year with four top-five finishes over their last five tournaments.
