Boston University's Department of Athletics and BU's Office of Government & Community Affairs hosted a special two-day summer sports camp on Tuesday and Wednesday on BU's athletic fields. The event brought more than 70 children ages 8 through 12 from the Boston Center for Youth and Families' Leahy-Holloran Community Center (BCYF, Leahy-Halloran) to the university's campus for two days of sports and mentoring by student-athletes and coaches.

Camp activities included basketball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, track & field and other games. In addition, campers were served lunch at BU's West Campus Dining Hall with BU student-athletes and coaches on hand to talk to campers about college life and the importance of an education.

"It was our pleasure welcoming campers from the Boston Center for Youth and Families to our campus and instructing them in a variety of sports as well as educating them about Boston University," Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello said. "Our athletic department is mindful of the impact we can have on children, and I hope this experience was as meaningful for the kids as I'm sure it was for our athletes and coaches."

The BU Summer Sports Camp was based on Boston University's and BCYF's shared mission that a college education should be available to children of all economic backgrounds.

"We are so thankful to all of the BU student-athletes, coaches and staff for taking the time out of their busy schedules to host the BU Summer Sports Camp," said Elizabeth Leary, director of community relations of BU's government and community affairs. "It was great to host BCYF and see the Terriers playing and interacting with kids from Boston neighborhoods. It is never too early to get children thinking about a college education."
