BOSTON – Senior
Adam Sheikali scored his second-career goal late in the first half and freshman
William Bonnelyche earned two saves during the frantic final minutes to lead the Boston University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Harvard on Saturday night at Nickerson Field.
With the shutout, the Terriers (1-5-0) claimed their third blank sheet in the last four meetings against the Crimson (1-3-1) while also avenging last year's 3-1 defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU dominated possession for most of the first half with sophomore Matt McDonnell getting the first good look at 4:38 on an attempt at the top of the box that went wide right.
- Havard's lone shot in the half came at 12:29 when Eric Gylling rifled a 35-yard shot that nailed the crossbar and was quickly cleared.
- After sophomore Satchel Cortet's shot was saved at 26:24 and junior T.J. Butzke's attempt went just wide at 28:12, the Terriers finally broke through at 43:39 when Cortet curled a long free kick near Harvard's bench into the box for Sheikali to collect and shoot inside the left post for the 1-0 advantage.
- Trying to net the equalizer, the Crimson recorded five shots in the second half against BU's one, a saved header from junior Ben Valek at 53:49.
- Bonnelyche faced his toughest test in the 88th minute when he had to punch out a long and high curling free kick from Paolo Belloni-Urso and then save a rushed attempt near the top of the box from Christian Sady.
GAME NOTES
- The defender Sheikali found the back of the net for the first time since tallying his first-career goal against Albany on Oct. 20, 2015.
- Cortet earned his first-career point and assist with the well-placed free kick in the 44th minute.
- Harvard was held to a season-tying low six shot attempts after combing for 30 in a 2-1 win at Providence and 1-1 draw against Northeastern.
- BU and the Crimson entered the contest averaging a combined 9.5 corners per game, but the Terriers had the only two of the game in the final six minutes of the contest.
- With Sheikali's goal, BU halted the program's record-long offensive shutout streak at five games.
NEXT UP: PRINCETON

- The game will be part of a BU soccer doubleheader, as the women will host Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
