BOSTON – Despite losing one starter to injury and another to two yellow cards, the Boston University men's soccer team rallied to tie Princeton, 1-1, on Tuesday evening at Nickerson Field.
Extending their unbeaten streak to two games thanks to junior
Nicki Wieners' 71st-minute goal, the Terriers move to 1-5-1, while the Tigers now sit at 0-3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Princeton quickly got on the board when Daniel Bowkett flicked the ball up the middle to Jeremy Colvin, who ran a few yards before firing a shot past freshman goalkeeper William Bonnelyche for the 1-0 advantage.
- The Tigers dominated possession for most of the half, limiting BU to just one shot attempt by freshman Peter Kargbo that was blocked in the 32nd minute, but Bonnelyche recorded three saves to keep the deficit at one.
- Senior and former All-Patriot League midfielder David Amirani was injured by a hard tackle that resulted in Princeton receiving the game's first of nine cards and had to be helped off the field just before the half.
- The Terriers used the moment as motivation and only needed 72 seconds before getting a quality look in the second half, a blocked shot attempt by sophomore Matt McDonnell.
- BU nearly netted the equalizer in the 59th minute, but junior Josh Barkoff's attempt was blocked and junior T.J. Butzke's shot went just wide left of the post.
- Just 50 seconds after subbing into the game, Wieners headed in a cross from senior Adam Sheikali at the right post past goalkeeper Jacob Schachner to tie the game, 1-1.
- With only 45 seconds remaining in regulation, junior Ben Valek received a second yellow card to put the Terriers down a man.
- In both overtimes, the Terriers were able to stand their ground and forced Princeton into making the only save, as the game ended in a draw.
