BU Shuts Out American, 2-0, in Patriot League Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Boosted by goals from sophomore Matt McDonnell and senior Eric Mubang, the Boston University men's soccer team rolled to a 2-0 victory at defending Patriot League regular season champion American on Saturday afternoon in the conference opener for both squads.

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Bernardi recorded six saves in his third start, as the Terriers (2-5-1, 1-0-0 PL) extended their unbeaten streak to three games with their second shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU earned its quickest goal of the season at 4:01 when McDonnell headed in a free kick from sophomore Satchel Cortet.
  • Bernardi posted five saves during the first half, including one just 18 seconds into the contest, to preserve the 1-0 lead entering the locker room, as American owned a slight 6-5 advantage in shot attempts.
  • The Terriers needed little time in the second half to add an insurance goal, as Mubang ran toward the net to knock in a cross from sophomore Mana Chavali.
  • Trying to mount a rally, American only managed three more shots the rest of the game for the loss.
GAME NOTES
  • Scoring multiple goals for the first time this season, the Terriers improved to 2-1-2 all-time in Patriot League openers.
  • McDonnell tallied his fourth-career goal, while Mubang found the back of the net for the first time in his collegiate career.
  • Both of Cortet's assists this season have come off free kick attempts from outside the box.
  • Chavali recorded a point in his debut as a Terrier after earning two goals and two assists last season for Clark University.
  • The Terriers moved to 2-3-1 all-time against American with their second consecutive shutout victory in D.C.
  • BU scored two goals against the Eagles after tallying two total during the previous five meetings.
NEXT UP: BROWN
  • The Terriers will remain on the road and return to non-conference play with a visit to Brown on Tuesday (Sept. 26) for a 7 p.m. start time.
  • BU is currently 1-0-1 against the Ivy League this season with a win over Harvard and 1-1 draw against Princeton.
  • Last year, sophomore Jerry Ozor tallied two assists to help the Terriers post a 2-0 home win over the Bears.
