Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Brown Outlasts Men's Soccer, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After freshman Toti Knutsson tied the game in the 78th minute off a penalty kick, Brown took advantage of a fortuitous deflection to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Stevenson Field.

With their three-game unbeaten streak snapped, the Terriers fall to 2-6-1, while the Bears improve to 5-1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just seconds after the Terriers seemingly got control of a Brown corner kick, the Bears' Daniel Schiller intercepted a pass and sent a cross from the left side in front to the charging Toby Howell at 10:14 for the 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Satchel Cortet had the Terriers' first quality look in the 17th minute when he received a through ball on the left side and fired at the near post for a Brown save.
  • Cortet later rifled a free kick attempt into the Bears' wall of defenders outside the box in the 36th minute, as BU posted a 7-4 advantage in shots entering the locker room.
  • The Bears had an excellent opportunity to extend the lead in the 50th minute when they forced a BU turnover outside the Terriers' box and only had the keeper in the way, but Bernardi came up with a terrific kick save.
  • The Terriers got on the board in the 78th minute when sophomore Mana Chavali was tackled in the box and Knutsson converted on the penalty kick.
  • One minute later at 78:48, Brown retook the lead for good, as Howell collected the ball and quickly scored inside the far post following a fortuitous bounce and failed BU clear on a free kick from midfield.
  • With under five minutes to go in regulation, the Terriers sent a long kick from midfield toward Brown's box with junior Josh Barkoff charging toward the keeper, who misplayed the ball and fell to the ground ... The ball eventually found the back of the net but after several seconds of celebrating, two of the officials reconvened and ruled the ball hit Barkoff's arm, sealing BU's fate.

  • Knutsson became the fifth Terrier to score a goal this season.
  • Brown now leads the all-time series, 24-15-4, after avenging last year's 2-0 defeat at Nickerson Field.

  • Bernardi finished with two saves against Joey Cipicchio's one, as BU edged the Bears in shot attempts, 10-9.
