BOSTON - Fueled by its highest scoring output since 2014, the Boston University women's soccer team cruised past American, 6-0, in its Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Christina Wakefield led the Terriers with two goals, while
McKenna Doyle,
Anna Heilferty,
Chloee Sagmoe and
Jacki Carty each found the back of the net.
How It Happened
- Just over seven minutes into the game, Rachel Bloznalis delivered a serve from midfield for Doyle, who arched a one-timer right inside the 20-yard box that slid inside the right post.
- Two minutes later, Julianna Chen sent another midfield serve, this time finding Heilferty down the left sideline. As American's keeper came off her post, Heilferty weaved around her before finishing with a left-footed strike.
- Wakefield showed her nose for the goal in the 22nd minute, touching a loose ball in the box before circling around a pair of defenders and buried the ball into the back of the net.
- Sagmoe netted the first goal of her career at the 28-minute mark, slipping in a loose ball off a corner kick inside the six-yard box.
- Carty also notched the first goal of her career off a corner kick, heading in BU's final score of the half on an assist from Shannon Keefe.
- Jesse Shreck caught American off-guard on a free kick just over six minutes into the second half, finding Pietra Sweeney on the left wing, who crossed it to an awaiting Wakefield by the right post for the easy finish.
Game Notes
- BU registered its highest scoring output since a 6-1 win over Lafayette on Oct. 11, 2014.
- The Terriers also posted their largest margin of victory since an 8-0 victory over UMBC on Oct. 16, 2011.
- Amanda Fay picked up the first shutout of her career, finishing with one save.
- Wakefield notched the first multi-goal game of her career and matched her career high with her third goal of the season. Wakefield scored three goals as a freshman in 2014.Â
From Coach Feldman
- "I liked how we hunted and how hungry we were in the box. A couple of the goals were pretty goals and a couple of the goals were dirty goals. Sometimes in order to break open the lid of scoring, you just have to hustle to get a toe on it and make a goal happen."
- "We needed that. That builds the confidence that we have the ability and lots of players who can put the ball in the back of the net."
Up Next
- BU will play its fourth straight game in Boston as it welcomes Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
- The men's team will kick off a Nickerson Field doubleheader as it faces Princeton at 4 p.m., while the women will follow with the Big Green at 7 p.m.
