Chen's Game-Winner Lifts Terriers Over Dartmouth, 1-0

BOSTON – Behind Julianna Chen's second game-winning goal of the season, the Boston University women's soccer team earned its second straight shutout as it blanked Dartmouth, 1-0, Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.

In the 18th minute, Chen snuck in between a pair of defenders on a feed from Jesse Shreck, and roped a left-footed shot into the back right post to put the Terriers on the board. BU would go on to limit the Big Green to just four shots on the night, while Amanda Fay picked up her second straight clean sheet in between the pipes after a three-save effort.

How it Happened
  • BU fired off four shots, including two on frame, over the first five minutes of the game, though Dartmouth's netminder fended off the early attack.
  • Applying steady pressure through the opening stanza, Libby Closson penetrated from the wing through a pair of Big Green defenders towards midfield before finding Anna Heilferty. Back-to-back flicks by Heilfety and Shreck set up an open lane right at the center of the 20-yard box for the oncoming Chen, who took a touch before slotting her second score of the season into the back of the net.
  • Neither team would get another shot off until BU struck two shots that were blocked in the final three minutes of the half.
  • Dartmouth nearly delivered the equalizer in the 53rd minute, but Fay made a point-blank save from 12 yards out to preserve the score.
Game Notes
  • Chen set a new career high with her second goal of the season. The junior previously scored one goal in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
  • BU gains its first advantage in the all-time series against Dartmouth, as it now claims an 8-7-5 edge.
  • The Terriers have now outshot their opponent in four straight games, holding a 70-18 shot advantage during that stretch. In three of those four games, BU has held its opponent to four shots or less.
Up Next
  • The Terriers resume Patriot League play as they head to Lehigh on Saturday, Sept. 23.
