Wakefield Lifts Terriers Over Holy Cross, 1-0

BOSTON – In the opening Turnpike Trophy game of the 2017-18 academic year, Christina Wakefield's header in the 13th minute proved to be the game-winning goal as the Boston University women's soccer team earned its fourth straight shutout with a 1-0 blanking of Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy matchup Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

How it Happened
  • Jesse Shreck sent a through ball down the left wing to Anna Heilferty, who stroked a one-timed left-footed cross towards the six-yard box. With the Crusaders keeper coming out for the save, Wakefield reached the ball first and drilled a header into the back of the net.
  • The Terrier defense was largely untested in the first half, as Holy Cross was not able to get a shot off, while BU tallied 11 shots, including five on frame.
  • BU ramped up its pressure in the second half, outshooting the Crusaders 16-2 and delivered nine shots on goal.
  • Amanda Fay made an impressive stop on the best shot Holy Cross could muster in the 64th minute, diving to her right to make a full-extension save.
  • Dorrie Varley-Barrett nearly furthered the score in the 77th minute, launching a shot from 25 yards out that rimmed off the crossbar.
Game Notes
  • BU has taken the last eight games to improve to 8-1-0 all-time against Holy Cross.
  • Since joining the Patriot League, the Terriers have outscored the Crusaders 13-1.
  • The Terriers have not allowed a goal in 402:37 minutes.
  • Fay picked up her fourth straight shutout and finished with two saves.
  • BU finished with a commanding lead in shots (27-2), shots on goal (14-2) and corner kicks (10-1).
From Coach Feldman
  • "I think we've committed to defending all over the field. Everybody works hard, they've worked hard since day one, but I think we're working smart and cohesively together."
  • "We've been trying to open the game up, move the ball and just be dynamic and attack. That's an area where we just have to stay active, move with our touch, move off the ball and move the ball dynamically. That to me is the way we want to play BU soccer."
Up Next
  • BU will travel back to Pennsylvania to square off against Lafayette for a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Oct. 1.
