Second-Half Spurt Lifts No. 16 Field Hockey Past Miami, 3-1

OXFORD, Ohio – After giving up the game's first goal, the No. 16 Boston University field hockey team strung together three tallies in just over eight minutes to post a 3-1 victory over the host RedHawks on Monday afternoon in the final game of the Miami Invitational. BU stays perfect on the year at 4-0 while the RedHawks move to an even 2-2.

Following a penalty-stroke goal by Miami that opened the scoring at the 45-minute mark, sophomore Hana Sinno started the BU run with her first goal as a Terrier in the 52nd minute. Senior Grace Boston provided the go-ahead tally less than three minutes later before freshman Miya Denison provided an insurance goal the 60th minute.

How it Happened

  • After a scoreless first half, Miami overcame a green card in the 37th minute and pressured the BU defense. Senior Jordyn Beesmer made a defensive save on a Miami shot but the ball hit her body, resulting in a penalty stroke that Paula Portugal converted at the 45-minute mark to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Just over six minutes later, BU used a corner to score an equalizer as senior Kali Shumock inserted the ball before collecting a pass from junior Maika Akroyd at the left post. Shumock slid the ball over to sophomore Hana Sinno, who deflected it in for her first goal as a Terrier at 51:33.
  • The Sinno goal ignited the visitors, as senior Grace Boston recorded her second game-winning goal of the weekend soon after, tipping in an offering by sophomore Kiley Gallagher at 54:28.
  • Junior Kara Enoch helped set up the third goal of the run, drawing in Miami goalkeeper Maddie Passarella before pushing the ball over to freshman Miya Denison, who knocked it home at 59:40.
  • Miami earned two corners in the final minute of regulation but the Terrier defense stood tall to secure the victory.

Game Notes

  • The Terriers held a 9-5 advantage in corners while Miami outshot BU, 15-12.
  • Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan saved both Miami shots she faced in the opening half.
  • Freshman Millie Baker made two saves in the second half to earn her first collegiate win.
  • Gallagher's assist was her first point as a Terrier.
  • Through four games, Boston leads the Terriers in points with five on two goals and an assist.
  • Passarella made two saves for the RedHawks, who dropped both of their games at their Miami Invitational.
  • BU received three green cards during the game but kept the RedHawks off the board during each one.
  • This is the first time in program history that the Terriers have won their first four games in back-to-back seasons. Last year's squad was victorious in its first seven contests.

From Coach Starr

  • "It was a hot one out there today so having a deep bench was definitely advantageous. Our fitness really held up for us in the second half and we were able to get that avalanche of goals. We played fast and smart after halftime and we were able to take advantage of some great scoring opportunities."
  • "It was really nice to see our young team come from behind two times this weekend against two tough teams. We didn't play the greatest hockey, but when it counted, we were able to get the goals we needed."

Up Next

  • BU will continue its five-game road stretch on Friday (Sept. 8) when it travels to face No. 18 Albany at 1 p.m.
  • The Terriers are 10-6 all-time against the Great Danes and the teams have not faced off since 2012, BU's final season in the America East Conference.
