No. 16 Terriers Tripped Up at No. 21 Albany, 3-1

ALBANY, N.Y. - The No. 16 Boston University field hockey team was handed its first loss of the season on Friday afternoon as No. 21 Albany came from behind to earn a 3-1 home win at Alumni Turf Field.

Sophomore Kiley Gallagher opened the scoring for the Terriers in the 25th minute with her first collegiate goal but the Great Danes scored off back-to-back corners midway through the second half to take the lead before securing the upset. BU moves to 4-1 on the year while Albany is now an even 2-2.

How it Happened

  • Neither team was able to generate much offense in the opening half but the Terriers took full advantage of their first chance of the game.
  • Right after re-entering the game, Gallagher dribbled through the right side and created space before firing a shot that found the boards at the 24:08 mark.
  • The Terriers threatened again in the final minute of the opening half but settled for a 1-0 halftime lead.
  • In the second half, the Great Danes earned five corners and scored on three of them.
  • Katie MacCallum tied the game in the 48th minute, redirecting a shot at the right post after serving as the insert on a corner.
  • Less than two minutes later, Frederike Helmke blasted a corner shot off a pass from Dana Bozek to give the home team the lead for good.
  • Helmke and Bozek teamed up again on a corner in the 67th minute as Helmke earned her second goal of the day to create a two-goal cushion.
  • The Terriers earned a corner in the late stages, firing four shots, including three on goal, but could not solve Albany netiminder Melissa Nealon.

Game Notes

  • The Terriers outshot the Great Danes, 11-7, while Albany held a 6-1 advantage in corners.
  • Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan saved the only shot she faced in the opening half before freshman Millie Baker made one save on four shots after halftime.
  • Nealon recorded five saves for Albany.
  • Albany received two green cards while the Terriers played at full strength all game.
