Men's Soccer Falls to Army West Point in Penalty Kicks in PL Quarterfinal
November 6, 2018 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON – The Boston University men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Army West Point in the Patriot League quarterfinals but had its season come to an end after the Black Knights emerged victorious in penalty kicks, 5-4.
The fourth-seeded Terriers had their best chances of getting on the board in the late stages of regulation but ended up having their season come to an end in a penalty shootout in the Patriot League tournament for the third straight year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After neither team was able to find the back of the net after regulation and two overtime periods, the first eight attempts in the penalty shootout were converted.
- A save by Army West Point goalkeeper Justin Stoll on senior David Riccio's attempt in the fifth round gave Ibrahim Seye a chance to win it for the visitors.
- Seye was successful, allowing the Black Knights to advance to the conference semifinals.
- Army had four shots on goal and all of them came in the first 29 minutes of regulation.
- Senior Mike Bernardi made saves on all four and was saved by the crossbar later in the match on a shot by Seye in the 60th minute.
- Junior Satchel Cortet had two chances in the second half to give BU a lead but his shot from distance in the 72nd minute drilled off the crossbar and Stoll made a remarkable save on his free kick in the closing seconds of regulation.
- BU recorded the only shot in overtime but Kari Petursson's attempt hit the left side of the net.
GAME NOTES
- Army West Point held a 9-6 shot advantage and each team had four corner kicks.
- Bernardi finished the night with four saves while Stoll recorded two.
2018 SEASON
- BU closes its season with a record of 5-10-4 overall and 4-4-1 in Patriot League play.
- Tuesday's result marked the final game for the Terriers' seven seniors – Josh Barkoff, Mike Bernardi, T.J. Butzke, Troy Phoa, David Riccio, Ben Valek and Adam Wright.
