BOSTON – Taking Case Gym for its non-conference home finale, the Boston University women's basketball team used a balanced effort to cruise past Delaware, 72-61, Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
With the win, BU closed out its non-conference home slate with a perfect 4-0 record, marking its first unblemished home non-conference games record since the 2011-12 season.
How It Happened
- BU and Delaware exchanged back-to-back baskets to open the game before Payton Hauck sliced through the lane to put the Terriers in front, 10-9.
- From there, Lauren Spearman and Katie Nelson lit it up from 3-point range, as each went 2-for-2 from deep to give BU an 18-13 edge.
- Nia Irving ran the floor in transition, converting on a layup to cap a 13-3 run to push the lead to 20-15 at the end of the first.
- The Terriers fired on all cylinders to start the second frame, opening with an 8-2 streak to take a 30-17 advantage.
- Nelson hit on her third 3-pointer of the half before Chiarra Tibbitt converted on back-to-back shots from the block to put the scoreboard in BU's favor, 37-24, at the half.
- Neither team could find a rhythm in the third, as each squad shot less than 27.0 percent from the floor.
- Delaware outscored BU 15-10 in the frame, through the Terriers held the overall lead at 47-39 heading into the fourth.
- BU swung the momentum as it opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back layups by Irving and Hauck, while Niayah Thompson converted on and and-1 to make it a 54-41 game.
- From there, the Terriers pushed out a 9-3 en route to sealing the game from the free throw line for their third straight win.
Game Notes
- BU won its first home game against the Blue Hens since 2005.
- Nelson continued her tear on Delaware, notching a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds.
- The sophomore put up 25 points in last season's 85-79 win in Newark.
- Hauck recorded her first career double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
- Irving and Spearman also recorded double figures, as Irving tallied 15 points and Spearman recorded 13.
- Spearman and Thompson also led the team with four assists apiece.
- The Terriers won their second consecutive game against Delaware for the first time since 1992, and posted its largest margin of victory over the Blue Hens since 1997.
