Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Edged by Penn State, 1-0

BOSTON - Freshman goaltender Kate Stuart made 33 saves, but the Boston University women's ice hockey team was edged by Penn State, 1-0, on Monday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

BU will enter 2019 with an 8-5-5 record while Penn State improved to 8-9-4. The defeat snapped the Terriers' six-game unbeaten streak and is just the second time since Nov. 1 that BU has lost.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Shea Nelson opened the scoring 8:57 into the proceedings when she knocked home a rebound at the left post to give Penn State a 1-0 lead.
  • Stuart was sensational in the second stanza, stopping all 14 shots she saw in the frame. That included a save on a Penn State breakaway early in the period to keep the Terriers down by just a goal entering the final 20 minutes.
  • BU pressed in the final frame but was unable to break through despite two power-play chances.
  • Head coach Brian Durocher pulled Stuart in favor of an extra attacker with 1:03 remaining in regulation and the Terriers in the midst of a penalty kill, but Penn State held on for the win despite several good opportunities from BU during the ensuing 5-on-5 play.

GAME NOTES

  • Sophomore Jesse Compher's 14-game point streak was snapped, as was redshirt junior Sammy Davis' 10-game point streak.
  • Stuart has made at least 30 saves in two of her three starts and has yet to allow more than two goals in those three appearances.
  • She lowered her goals-against average to 1.68 and boosted her save percentage to .949.

NEXT UP: MAINE

  • The Terriers will travel to Orono for a weekend series with Maine that begins on Jan. 5 at 2 p.m.
