Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Maine Sneaks Past BU, 1-0

ORONO, Maine - Sophomore goaltender Corinne Schroeder made 21 saves, but the Boston University women's ice hockey team suffered a 1-0 setback at Maine on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

BU (8-6-5, 5-5-4 WHEA) and Maine (12-7-1, 5-7-1 WHEA) were locked in a scoreless battle until Michelle Weis broke through with 4:22 to play in the third period.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Freshman Courtney Correia had perhaps the best chance of the opening 20 minutes for the Terriers, but her shot from between the circles rang off the crossbar.
  • Sophomore Jesse Compher also had a great bid to open the scoring in the first period thanks to a great feed from junior Breanna Scarpaci, but Compher's wrist shot from the right circle whistled just wide.
  • BU outshot the Black Bears, 9-7, in the second stanza, and more importantly held Maine to just one shot on goal during its two power-play opportunities of the frame.
  • Redshirt junior Sammy Davis nearly got BU on the board just over 7:00 into the third when she blocked a shot and created a 2-on-1 rush with freshman Mackenna Parker, but Davis' backhander was turned aside.
  • Davis' line followed that chance with a terrific shift in the Maine zone, but despite several good chances, the game remained scoreless.
  • Schroeder's shutout bid came to an end with 4:22 remaining in regulation. With Weis on a 1-on-3 rush, Schroeder turned aside the initial effort. The puck caromed off Weis and into the back of the net, however, to give Maine a 1-0 lead.
  • BU earned its fourth and final power-play chance with 1:49 to play and pulled Schroeder in favor of an extra attacker, but Maine held the Terriers at bay to preserve the shutout.

GAME NOTES

  • Schroeder has not allowed two or more goals in each of her last four starts.
  • Maine was the first team in 250:38 to score an even-strength goal on Schroeder.
  • Schroeder has not allowed a 5-on-5 goal in the last 253:11 she has played.
  • She lowered her goals-against average to 1.86 and improved her save percentage to .934.

NEXT UP: MAINE

  • The Terriers will conclude their weekend series with the Black Bears on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
