The Hockey East home stretch run for the Boston University men's hockey team hits its February milepost on Friday night as the Terriers travel westward to face Massachusetts. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center in Amherst.
On the heels of a non-conference sweep of Arizona State last weekend in the Valley of the Sun, BU (13-11-2, 9-7-2 HEA) carries a six-game unbeaten streak into the Pioneer Valley where it faces the Minutemen (11-14-1, 5-10-1) for the first time this year.
The game can be viewed locally on NESN, outside of New England on either Eleven Sports or UMassAthletics.com, or in Canada on TSN GO.
The Terriers ride a current run of 5-0-1 into the UMass game for a series where BU has seen historic and recent success. The Terriers hold a 61-11-6 edge in the all-time series with UMass, including a 9-0-1 mark since David Quinn took over as head coach. BU has won each of the last eight contests though is playing at the Mullins Center for the first time since 2015 as UMass' home game against BU last winter became a Frozen Fenway contest.
Freshmen dominate the UMass scoring leaders as each of the team's top five point-getters are in their first year for the Minutemen. All freshmen, Oliver Chau tops UMass with 20 points, Mitchell Chaffee leads the team with 10 goals and Mario Ferraro's 14 assists makes him the Minutemen's top setup man. Four different UMass freshmen (John Leonard, Chau, Cale Makar and Matt Murray) have been named the Hockey East Rookie of the Week this season. Murray and Ryan Wischow have split time in the UMass net this year with comparable results. Both have a .898 save percentage while Wischow's goals against average is 3.03 vs. a 3.09 for Murray.
Not only have the Terriers been winning consistently of late, BU has also been scoring consistently. BU has scored at least one goal in 10 straight periods. It ties for the longest such streak for the Terriers since the 2010 season when BU also had a 10-period scoring run from Feb. 8-19. BU last played a goalless stanza in the second period of a 4-3 win at Merrimack on Jan. 19. The Terriers did get 14 shots off on Craig Pantano over those 20 minutes, but all were saved.
With last weekend's efforts in Arizona, the Terriers already have six 20-point scorers on the season. In David Quinn's five years at the helm, only once (eight in 2015-16) have the Terriers eclipsed this sum for an entire season. The sextet is: junior Bobo Carpenter (26), junior Jordan Greenway (23), sophomore Patrick Harper (21), freshman Brady Tkachuk (21), freshman Shane Bowers (20) and sophomore Dante Fabbro (20). Additionally, sophomore Chad Krys stands on the cusp of joining this list with 19 points on the year.
UMass will be BU's final tune up before Monday night's Beanpot opener at 8 p.m. against Harvard. Although ample emphasis is placed on that marquee annual non-conference game at TD Garden, the Terriers have shown a propensity to focus on the task at hand as it relates to success in Hockey East action. BU has found success heading into the Beanpot, posting a 9-1-3 mark since the 2004-05 season in its last game prior to the annual Bostonian showcase event. Curiously, the lone loss came at UMass in 2013 and BU is not looking to repeat that history.
