BOSTONÂ - The Boston University women's lacrosse team will open its 2018 season as it hosts No. 4/6 Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 17. Game time against the 2017 NCAA runner-up is slated for 1 p.m.
BATTLE FOR BOSTON
- Saturday's matchup will mark the third straight season BU will open up its season against its crosstown rival.
- The Eagles have taken the past two matchups, though BU fell narrowly last season in a 13-11 decision.
CONRY EARNS PRESEASON HONORS
- Kailey Conry was named to the Patriot League Preseason All-League Team.
- A Second Team All-Patriot League selection last year, Conry ranked No. 2 in the NCAA with 3.0 assists per game and broke the BU single-season record with 54 assists.
- Conry was additionally named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region Second Team and Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team.
RETURN OF THE ATTACK
- BU returns .726 percent of its goal scoring and .716 percent of its point total from last season.
- Kaily Conry led the Terriers with 68 points with 54 assists and 14 goals.
- Mickenzie Larivee led the Terriers with 44 goals, posting nine hat tricks and also added one assist and 15 ground balls.
BREAKING OUT
- Avery Donahoe posted a breakout season on the attack in 2017, ranking third on the squad with 33 goals.
- The senior started all 18 games and posted 11 multi-goal games and six hat tricks.
TERRIERS TABBED TO FINISH FOURTH IN PL
- BU was picked by the league's coaches and sports information directors to finish fourth in the annual Patriot League preseason poll.
- The Terriers earned 120 points, just four behind third-place Lehigh. Navy (162 points) received all 18 possible first-place votes, with Loyola (146) earning the other two top nods.
- BU has finished in the top four of the regular-season standings and advanced to the Patriot League championship semifinals in each of its first four seasons in the conference.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
- BU will look for its 10 freshmen, the most rookies on its roster since the 2013 season, to make an immediate impact this season.
NOW IN NET
- The Terriers will look Christine Laible and Bianca Smith to replace Caroline Meegan in net.
- Laible has seen action in 12 games over the past three seasons, owning a 10.03 goals against average and a .419 save percentage.
- Smith saw action in two games during her rookie campaign, posting a 12.00 goals against average and .500 save percentage.
- Â Meegan set the program single-season record with 218 saves and was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.
- Additionally, she finished second all-time with 603 saves and was the starting netminder all four of her seasons in Boston.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Boston College started last weekend with a 13-11 in South Bend against No. 15 Notre Dame before taking care of Holy Cross, 20-2, on Tuesday.
- Sam Apuzzo, who set the single-season Eagle record with 93 points last season, opened Tuesday's contest with a natural hat trick and leads the team in goals (8), assists (4) and points (12).
- Apuzzo became the fastest player in program history to record 100 points, reaching the mark in 25 games.
- Kaileen Hart posted a breakout season in 2017, finishing with a career-high 75 points on 49 goals and 26 assists.
- Hart follows Apuzzo in goals (5), assists (3) and points (12).
- Lauren Daly has started both games in net and claims a 7.25 goals against average and .500 save percentage.
- On defense, Elizabeth Miller, a 2017 IWLCA Second Team All-American, has caused three turnovers so far this season.
- The Eagles will be without the services of Kenzie Kent, the NCAA Most Outstanding Player at the Championship last season, who is still competing on the BC women's hockey team.
- Kent became the first player in NCAA history to be named the Most Outstanding Player despite not playing on the winning team.
THE SERIES
- BC holds the 11-12-1 edge in the all-time series dating back to 1982.
- The Eagles have taken the past eight matchups.
- The Terriers had won five straight against BC until the Eagles flipped the script over the past decade.
- BU's last win came in a 13-6 decision at Chestnut Hill on March 8, 2009.
ANCHOR DOWN
- Maria Guerra enters her fourth season as a starter and has been a stalwart on the back line.
- Guerra tied for the team lead with 20 caused turnovers last year and ranked fifth with 18 ground balls.
- Sarah Andersen will return to the lineup after missing the majority of last season due to injury.
- BU will replace four starters on defense, including two co-captains in All-Patriot League Second Team member Janelle Macone and Charlotte Castronovo, the Aldo "Buff" Donelli Leadership Award recipient.
PILING UP POINTS
- Kailey Conry and Mickenzie Larivee lead the team with 15-game point streaks.
- Conry has 67 points over the past 15 games, with 54 of those coming on assists.
- 42 of Larivee's 44 points during her streak have come from goals, and she posted 15 multi-goal games a season ago.
- Larivee caught fire down the stretch, scorching 31 goals, including eight hat tricks, over the final nine games.
THE ROAD AHEAD
- BU will face two ranked opponents over its first three games, starting with No. 6 BC and follow against current No. 18 Duke on Sunday, March 4.
- Navy, who also reached the Final Four last season, holds the No. 10 spot.
- Following BU's matchup with Duke, the Terriers will head to Johns Hopkins, who has received votes in the national polls each week.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINS
- The Terriers will be led by two senior captains in 2018 in Avery Donahoe and Maria Guerra.
- Donahoe posted a breakout season in 2017, setting career highs with 33 goals and nine assists, which both ranked third on the team.Â
- Donahoe started all 18 games at the attack, leading Terriers with three game-winning goals and posted 12 multi-goal efforts.
- An anchor of the defense, Guerra has started every game the past two seasons. • Guerra tied for the team lead with 20 caused turnovers a season ago and also notched 10 ground balls and won six draw controls.Â
- A leader in the classroom as well, Guerra has twice been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
TERRIERS ON THE WORLD STAGE
- Head coach Liz Robertshaw won her second gold medal as an assistant coach with Team USA at the FIL World Cup in England this past summer.
- Sarah Andersen racked up two goals, three assists and five draw controls and helped guide Israel to a sixth-place finish.
- Former Terrier standout Caitlin Defliese ('10) also served as an assistant coach for Canada.
BUT THIS GOES TO 12
- Head coach Liz Robertshaw is in her 12th season at the helm of the women's lacrosse program.
- She will be in search of her fifth conference title in 2018 and in the process will look to advance to the Patriot League semifinals for a fifth consecutive season.
