Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Skate Past New Hampshire, 2-1

DURHAM, N.H. - Senior captain Rebecca Leslie scored two goals to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory at New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU (12-15-6, 7-11-5 WHEA) was the better team in the opening 20 minutes and Leslie rewarded the team on the scoreboard at the 16:41 mark. As BU completed a line change, Leslie skated into the offensive zone and chased after a self-pass behind the UNH (14-12-7, 9-9-5 WHEA) cage. She then won a 1-on-1 battle, controlled the puck and curled to the slot before roofing a shot past Ava Boutilier (24 saves) for her 20th goal of the season. Sophomore Abby Cook and junior Mary Grace Kelley each assisted on Leslie's marker.
  • Freshman Corinne Schroeder (25 saves) kept the second period scoreless thanks to some fine goaltending. She made three straight point-blank saves during a UNH power play, and then denied the Wildcats' leading goal scorer, Meghara McManus, on a breakaway late in the frame.
  • Leslie made it 2-0 at the 9:44 mark of the third period with a power-play strike. Senior Victoria Bach got the puck to Cook, who then fed it to Leslie in the left circle. Leslie one-timed the puck inside the left post for her 21st goal of the year.
  • UNH pulled Boutilier in favor of an extra attacker and it paid dividends with 2:43 remaining in regulation when Taylor Wenczkowski scored to cut the BU lead to 2-1.
  • The Wildcats again had an extra attacker on the ice in the final moments of the period, but BU held the UNH attack at bay to hold on for the win.

LESLIE LIGHTS THE LAMP

  • Leslie reached the 20-goal plateau in a season for the first time in her collegiate career.
  • This is now the second straight year and third season out of the last four in which at least two Terriers have tallied 20 goals in the same season.
  • Leslie also recorded her career-best 50th point of the season with her two goals.
  • She remains two assists away from 100 for her career, which would match Marie-Philip Poulin's program record.

SCHROEDER SHARP FOR THE TERRIERS

  • Schroeder kept the Terriers in front thanks to some terrific goaltending throughout the contest.
  • She made nine saves in the second period, which included five stops during three Wildcat power plays.
  • Schroeder then stopped 11 of the 12 shots she faced in the final frame to preserve the two points.
  • In two starts against UNH this season, Schroeder has made 67 saves and allowed just three goals.

BACH REACHES 60

  • Bach notched her 60th point of the season with her assist on Leslie's second goal.
  • She became the first Terrier in program history to record 60 points in a season.
  • Bach now has 35 goals and 25 assists this year.

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

  • Cook notched two assists on Saturday for her fourth multi-assist game of the campaign.
  • She now leads all NCAA defenders with 23 assists this season.
  • Cook enters Sunday with a career-best 25 points this year.

NEXT UP: SENIOR DAY

  • BU will honor its six seniors prior to puck drop against UNH on Sunday at Walter Brown Arena.
  • Game time is set for 3 p.m.
  • Sunday is also the 11th annual ChiliFest. Fans in attendance will be able to sample chilis from four different BU dining halls.
