Terriers Celebrate Senior Day with 2-0 Win over New Hampshire

February 18, 2018

BOSTON - Senior Erin O'Neil stopped all 32 shots she faced to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.

THANK YOU SENIORS

  • O'Neil and six of her classmates - Victoria Bach, Rebecca Leslie, Savannah Newton, Nina Rodgers and student manager David Souza - were honored before the game as part of Senior Day.
  • The Class of 2018 helped BU earn its fifth Hockey East championship and won over 75 games in four seasons.

WE'RE ON TO MAINE

  • Thanks to Sunday's win, BU clinched the sixth seed for the Hockey East playoffs and will travel to Maine for a best-of-three series.
  • All three contests are scheduled for 2 p.m., with the series starting on Friday, Feb. 23.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • BU (13-15-6, 8-11-5 WHEA) opened the scoring just 5:20 into the proceedings when freshman Kristina Schuler deftly redirected junior Connor Galway's well-placed shot into the back of the net. Redshirt sophomore Abbey Stanley also assisted on Schuler's third goal of the season.
  • UNH enjoyed two power-play chances in the middle stanza, but O'Neil and a tenacious penalty kill held strong. They limited the Wildcats to just two shots across those power plays.
  • O'Neil's finest period was the last one, as she made 15 of her 32 saves in the final frame.
  • One of those stops came early in the stanza when she kicked aside a Wildcat shot and then dove across her crease to influence a rebound attempt away from the cage.
  • Sophomore Breanna Scarpaci came up with a huge play late in the third when she broke up a breakaway chance thanks to an excellent backcheck.
  • Rodgers then had some heroics along the crease, as she prevented a wrap-around chance from finding its way into an open cage after O'Neil made the initial save.
  • Senior Victoria Bach capped the contest with an empty-net goal thanks to assists from Leslie and junior Regan Rust.

ERIN EXCELLENT ON SUNDAY

  • O'Neil set up the Terriers for success with excellent goaltending all game.
  • She made nine saves in the first period and eight more in the second stanza before stopping all 15 shots she faced in the final 20 minutes.
  • This was O'Neil's third career shutout and first of the 2017-18 season.
  • Her last shutout came on Feb. 26, 2016, when she blanked Vermont in a 3-0 playoff win.
  • Sunday also marked the second straight year in which a BU senior earned a shutout on Senior Day.
  • Victoria Hanson made 35 saves in a 5-0 win over Maine last year.

SCHULER SPOTS THE TERRIERS A LEAD

  • Schuler's third goal of the season proved to be the game-winner.
  • It was her first goal since Oct. 29, when she scored in a 2-2 tie at UNH.
  • Schuler enters the playoffs with 11 points thanks to her three goals and eight assists.

LESLIE ONE AWAY FROM 100

  • Leslie recorded her 30th assist of the season on Sunday for the second 30-assist campaign of her collegiate career.
  • She is now one assist away from matching Marie-Philip Poulin's program record of 100 career assists.
  • Leslie also became the first Terrier in program history to score 20 goals and record 30 assists in the same season.

BACH IN THE GOALS

  • Bach extended her point streak to four games with her 36th goal of the season.
  • She remains second in the nation in goals and first in the NCAA with 1.20 goals per game.
