Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 20 Terriers Edge UConn, 2-1, to Advance to Hockey East Semifinals

BOSTON – Freshman Logan Cockerill broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and the No. 20 Boston University men's ice hockey hung on for a 2-1 victory over UConn to complete a sweep in their Hockey East quarterfinal series at Agganis Arena on Saturday evening.

Freshman Brady Tkachuk opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the closing seconds of the opening period before UConn tied up the contest midway through regulation. Sophomore netminder Jake Oettinger turned in a 36-save performance for the Terriers.

The fourth-seeded Terriers won their 12th straight home playoff game and advanced to the Hockey East semifinals for the 14th time in 17th years. BU will face archrival Boston College in the early semifinal at TD Garden on Friday (March 16). Game time is set for 5 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Off a rush, freshman Shane Bowers spotted Cockerill all alone towards the bottom of the right circle, where he faked out UConn netminder Adam Huska before roofing a shot with 3:58 left in the second.
  • That would be the final goal of the game as the Terriers withstood a 15-shot third period by the visitors to hang on for the win.
  • BU got its second power-play opportunity of the night with 21 seconds left in the opening period and quickly converted as Tkachuk got a shot through traffic from the right side with 3.1 seconds remaining in the stanza.
  • UConn got an equalizer with 10:52 left in the second period off a redirect by Max Kalter on an attempt by Joseph Masonius. 

GAME NOTES

  • Cockerill's goal pushed his point streak to 10 games with 11 points (4g, 7a) during the stretch. 
  • Sophomore Dante Fabbro assisted on both BU goals.
  • The Huskies held a large 37-19 shot advantage and got a 17-save performance from Huska.
  • It marked the first time all season that BU was held to under 20 shots.
  • Junior Jordan Greenway extended his point streak to six games with an assist on Tkachuk's goal.
  • Eight of BU's past nine Hockey East tournament games have been decided by one goal and the Terriers are 6-2 in those contests.

UP NEXT

  • The Terriers will face No. 18 and top-seeded Boston College in the Hockey East semifinals on Friday (March 16) at TD Garden. 
  • The game, which starts at 5 p.m., will be televised on NESN and streamed on ESPN3 outside the New England area.
