HEMPSTEAD & QUEENS, N.Y. – The Boston University softball team opened the St. John's Invitational with a pair of tough road losses on Saturday afternoon.
2017 CAA runner-up Hofstra (11-7) and Big East runner-up St. John's (7-16) combined for five homers at their respective home facilities to drop the Terriers to 8-14 on the season. BU fell to the Pride, 7-2, before coming up just one run short against the Red Storm, 4-3.
GAME TWO: ST. JOHN'S 4, BU 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Storm started in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer against freshman Cali Dolfi and added two more solo homers against sophomore Kali Magane in the bottom of the first.
- Freshman Ali Dubois was the third pitcher to appear for the Terriers and held St. John's off the scoreboard for the final 5.1 innings by allowing just two hits and two walks with the help of four strikeouts.
- BU tried mounting a comeback in the third after junior Alex Heinen crushed a three-run homer to center to plate freshman Jen Horita and senior Emma Wong.
- Junior Madi Killebrew followed up with a one-out double for BU's fourth hit of the inning but was stranded at second.
- After stranding two on base in the fourth and fifth, senior Kaitlin Sahlinger led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on a groundout, but the Red Storm induced a pair of fly outs to end the threat.
- St. John's Madison Morris (5-6) finished with five strikeouts to earn her sixth complete-game performance of the season.
GAME ONE: HOFSTRA 7, BU 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride jumped out with a two-run homer against freshman Ali Dubois (4-4) to take the lead for good.
- Hofstra took advantage of a throwing error with a two-out RBI double and three-run homer against Dolfi before adding another run on a double steal.
- Sophomores Lizzie Annerino and Kali Magane held the Pride off the scoreboard for the final three innings with Magane tallying three strikeouts.
- Held to one hit through the first six innings, BU posted two runs off three hits in the seventh to avoid the shutout, as freshman Maya Kipfmiller earned a two-out RBI single and Wong scored on a wild pitch.
- Sophie Dandola (6-3) tallied two strikeouts in the complete-game win for Hofstra.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- Heinen's homer at St. John's marked the first of the season for the Terriers and her 11th career bomb.
- Killebrew led the Terriers with a combined three hits, while Sahlinger, Wong and Heinen tallied two apiece.
- The Terriers are now 2-6 this season in one-run decisions and are 1-7 in true road contests.
NEXT UP: ST. JOHN'S INVITATIONAL DAY TWO
- The Terriers will wrap up the event on Sunday by returning to Hofstra for matchups with UMass (11 a.m.) and Binghamton (1:15 p.m.).
