LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Continuing its spring break trip in California, the Boston University softball team was edged by Loyola Marymount on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep.
The Lions (9-10-1) scored four runs through the first five innings of each contest and held off two late charges from the Terriers (7-8). LMU finished the day with an 18-11 advantage in hits.
GAME ONE: LMU 4, BU 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Following three scoreless innings, LMU led off the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off single and then with two outs added an RBI single and RBI double against sophomore Lizzie Annerino (1-3) to take the lead for good.
- The Lions extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth after a BU error with Delanie Wisz's third home run of the season against sophomore Kali Magane.
- BU tried to mount a rally in the seventh with a lead-off single by junior Madi Killebrew.
- After senior Emma Wong replaced her at first on a fielder's choice, Wong scored on junior Emily Morrow's single and a LMU error.
- The Terriers added a second run on another LMU miscue and had the go-ahead run at home plate following senior Kaitlin Sahlinger's single.
- Finishing with three strikeouts against three hits, Hannah Badimere (6-3) sealed the win by getting an infield pop up to record her sixth complete-game performance of the season.
GAME TWO: LMU 4, BU 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams stranded two runners on base in the first inning, the Lions jumped out ahead in the second with a two-out, two-RBI double against freshman Cali Dolfi (3-2).
- BU cut the deficit in half in the top of the third on senior Brittany Younan's single and junior Alex Heinen's RBI double.
- The Lions stayed on the attack with a lead-off double and single to put two in scoring position with zero outs, prompting a pitching change.
- LMU added two runs against freshman Ali Dubois on a defensive error and two-out RBI double to extend lead to 4-1.
- Dubois held the Lions to just three hits the rest of the way.
- Freshman Jen Horita added a run for the Terriers in the fifth by singling to left, taking third on Heinen's single and scoring on Killebrew's RBI grounder.
- Wong led off the sixth with a single, prompting LMU to bring in reliever Megan Thorp, who first had a wild pitch and then gave up an RBI single to junior Alexa Ponce.
- Thorp faced the top of BU's lineup in the seventh and induced three groundouts with Killebrew getting on base on a two-out infield single.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- All five BU pitchers made an appearance during the doubleheader .... Freshman Maya Kipfmiller made her first appearance of the season in the circle, holding the Lions to one hit during the final 1.1 innings of the first game.
- Wong, Killebrew and Heinen led BU with two hits apiece for the day.
- LMU improved to 5-1 all-time against the Terriers with the Lions hosting BU in a doubleheader each of the last three seasons
NEXT UP: LOUISVILLE SLUGGER TOURNAMENT
- The Terriers will next visit Long Beach State on Thursday (March 8) at 9 a.m. PT for a meeting with San Jose State and then a matchup against LBSU at 2 p.m. PT.
- BU will visit Cal State Fullerton on Friday (March 9) for a rematch with San Diego State and a contest against the host Titans.
- Finally, the Terriers will wrap up the tournament at LBSU against No. 3/4 UCLA on Saturday (March 9).
