Homers Reign in Softball's DH Sweep over Central Connecticut State

BOSTON – Highlighted by five homers, including a pair of three-run walk-off round trippers, the Boston University softball team wrapped up its five-game homestand with a doubleheader sweep over Central Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Madi Killebrew's first-career homer gave the Terriers (22-17) a 10-1 run-rule victory in the first game, as sophomore Kali Magane (2-1) collected seven strikeouts in her longest pitching performance of the season. Senior Kaitlin Sahlinger then ended the second contest with her second blast of the season for a 12-9 eight-inning win over the Blue Devils (14-22). Freshman Ali DuBois (15-6) posted a season-high 10 strikeouts to help expend BU's win streak to four games.

GAME 1: BU 10, CCSU 1 (6 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off senior Brittany Younan's walk and RBI hits from junior Alex Heinen (double), Killebrew (single) and Ponce (single).
  • CCSU started the second with a single, double and sac fly to get the on the scoreboard, but Magane prevented further damage by getting a fly out and strikeout.
  • The Blue Devils' next best chance to score came in the fourth when they earned a pair of walks and a single to load the bases before freshman Jen Horita robbed them of more runs by charging in from left to catch a dropping pop up.
  • BU added an insurance run in the fifth on a pair of singles from senior Emma Wong and Heinen and then a sac fly from Killebrew.
  • The Terriers then put the game away in the sixth with six runs off four hits and an error.
  • Junior Alexa Ponce led off with a solo homer and was followed by Heinen's mishandled grounder that led to two runs.
  • With one out and two on base, Killebrew sent a 1-0 pitch deep to right center for the victory.
GAME 2: BU 12, CCSU 9 (8 inn.)

EIGHTH INNING
  • Using international tiebreaker rules, CCSU started with a runner at second but failed to advance the runner against DuBois off an infield pop up, a lineout to center and strikeout.
  • Senior Emma Wong was placed on second and eventually moved to third after Heinen and Killebrew were hit by pitches.
  • Schanda lined into a double play at second with Heinen being caught in time to leave runners at the corners.
  • Facing a 1-2 count, Sahlinger delivered a three-run homer to right center for the walk-off victory.
THE SETUP
  • After CCSU jumped out in front on a two-out RBI double, Killebrew hit a second three-run homer of the day to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead.
  • Senior Jilee Schanda then hit a single, took second on Sahlinger's sacrifice bunt and then scored on a misplayed grounder by the Blue Devils.
  • Following CCSU's pitching change, freshman Marina Sylvestri added a two-out RBI single to push the lead to 5-1.
  • Schanda added another run on a RBI grounder in the second, but CCSU used a triple and sac fly to keep the deficit at four in the third.
  • The Blue Devils added a second triple in the fifth with two outs to pull within three, but the Terriers responded in the bottom half with two runs off three hits, including senior Brittany Younan's RBI single.
  • Owning an 8-3 lead, the Terriers made a pitching change to start the sixth but ran into trouble as freshman Cali Dolfi and sophomore Lizzie Annerino gave up a combined four walks.
  • With two outs and the bases loaded, DuBois reentered the game but gave up a walk and then a bases-clearing RBI single that resulted from the outfield committing two errors.
  • CCSU scored a total of six runs with just the help of one single, but the lead did not last long, thanks to Schanda's one-out towering homer to left in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Both teams went 1-2-3 in quick fashion to send the game to extra innings.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES

  • DuBois' 10 strikeouts were the most by a BU pitcher since Melanie Russell ('16) fanned 15 at Colgate on May 7, 2016.
