Swimming And Diving Announces 2018-19 Captains

April 11, 2018

BOSTON – The Boston University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be led by seven captains during the 2018-19 season, as announced by head coach Bill Smyth Wednesday.

Alex Ewart, Cameron Schoffstall and Matt Traub will lead the men's team, while Julimar Avila, Marisa Reidemeister, Brittany Steinfeld and Hanna King will guide the women's squad.

Traub was an integral part of BU's 200 and 400 free relay teams at the Patriot League championships, which both finished in third place. Ewart was a steady presence in the 500 free and 200 fly this past season, while Schoffstall earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors for the second consecutive year after finishing fifth overall in both the one-meter and three-meter dives at the championships.

"This will be the first year in a long time where we have a completely new set of captain, said Smith. "I'm thrilled that we possess a deep reservoir of talented leaders in addition to our captains. The Bloom Family Leadership Academy is paying huge dividends for us. We have a significant leadership component within our upperclassmen swimmers and divers, and those that were just named captain will hold a tremendous honor and responsibility to ensure the continued expectation of preparing for success."

Avila earned her second career All-Patriot League First Team nod after consistently placing in the 100 fly and 50 free throughout the season. Reidemeister is a specialist in the 50 and 100 free, while Steinfeld is a threat in the breast and free. King will enter her second season as a team captain and will lead the divers.

"First and foremost, I expect that our captains will lead by example," stated Smyth. "Secondly, I'm looking forward to helping them lead the team for the next 12 months. I think this will be a group that will work together well and will use their varying skill sets to optimize our performance in our daily endeavors as well as our training and competitions."
