LOWELL, Mass. – Boosted by junior
Alex Heinen's 7-of-8 performance at the plate in which she hit for the cycle, the Boston University softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep at UMass Lowell on Tuesday afternoon to extend the win streak to a season-high nine games.
Heinen first went 4-of-4 with a two-run blast and double in a 10-2 run-rule victory and then helped the Terriers (27-17) tie a school record with one of three triples in a game en route to a 10-1 win. Senior
Emma Wong reached home plate five times in the sweep against the River Hawks (12-22), while senior
Jilee Schanda and junior
Madi Killebrew went a combined 6-of-12 with seven RBIs, five runs scored, two doubles, a triple and homer.
Freshman
Ali DuBois (19-6), sophomore
Kali Magane (3-1) and freshman
Cali Dolfi held UML to a combined three runs on 11 hits with the help of seven strikeouts during 13 innings of work.
GAME 1: BU 10, UML 2 (6 inn.)
- In the top of the first, senior lead-off batter Brittany Younan walked to first, stole second, advanced to third on Wong's single and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Terriers the lead for good.
- Heinen followed with a two-run homer to right center to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The Terriers extended the lead to 7-0 over the next three innings with the help of six hits, including a two-RBI single from Schanda, who also produced a sac fly.
- Trying to mount a comeback, UML started the bottom of the fourth with a walk and back-to-back doubles against Dolfi, but Magane kept the lead at five runs by getting a fly out, strikeout and ground out.
- BU put the game away in the top of the sixth with three runs off back-to-back doubles from Heinen and Killebrew and a second sac fly by Schanda.
- Magane allowed just two hits in the final three innings to seal the run-rule win.
GAME 2: BU 10, UML 1
- Younan again gave BU the lead for good in the first, as she tripled down the left field line and scored on Wong's infield single.
- The Terriers added five runs off four hits in the third, including a two-RBI triple by Heinen that saw her score on a throwing error.
- Killebrew followed with a solo homer, and then Schanda tripled to right before scoring on junior Alexa Ponce's sac fly.
- The River Hawks got on the scoreboard during the bottom of the third with a run off three hits, including a double but only managed two more hits the rest of the contest against DuBois.
- BU added two more runs in the sixth with junior Emily Morrow and senior Kaitlin Sahlinger scoring on freshman Marina Sylvestri's single to right.
- Another freshman stepped up in the seventh, as pinch hitter Maya Kipfmiller ripped a 2-2 pitch up the middle to plate Schanda and Killebrew for a 10-1 lead.
- DuBois finished with four strikeouts against one walk for the victory.
DOUBLEHEADER NOTES
- BU improved to 11-2 all-time against UML by avenging last year's 4-2 nine-inning loss at home.
- The Terriers batted .404 during the DH and finished with a .648 slugging percentage behind four doubles, three triples and two homers.
- The three triples gave BU 22 on the season, second most in program history behind the 35 set in 1994 and one more than the 21 recorded in 1995.
- With her lead-off triple in the second game, Younan tied a Patriot League record with nine triples in a season, which is also the second most ever at BU behind Beth Iwamoto's 13 set in 1994 ... The triple also helped Younan surpass former teammate Moriah Connolly ('17) for sole possession of No. 5 all-time with 226 career hits.
- Younan also had a stolen base to move into a tie for eighth all-time in the Patriot League record book with 56 total.
- Heinen's double moved her in a tie-for-seventh all-time at BU with 31 total.
- DuBois' 19 wins this season are tied for eighth most in a season at BU and one shy of cracking the top 10 in the Patriot League.
- BU has reached 10+ runs seven times (7-0) this season, its most since going 6-1 in 2015.
NEXT UP: LAFAYETTE
- The Terriers will resume Patriot League play at home against Lafayette with Saturday's doubleheader set for 12 p.m.
- BU is currently in first place at 7-2 with Bucknell close behind at 9-3.
- BU swept the Leopards, 14-0, last season, but had to win the first game (1-0) in 11 innings.
- Two years ago at home, the Terriers swept Lafayette by a combined score of 15-1.
