Annerino Tosses First-Career Shutout in 7-0 Win over Providence

BOSTON – Sophomore Lizzie Annerino recorded a career-high four strikeouts and junior Alex Heinen provided a pair of RBI extra-base hits to help lead the Boston University softball team to a 7-0 home win over Providence on Tuesday afternoon.

With their third straight shutout and 10th overall of the season, the Terriers (31-17) extend their win streak to 13 games, the fourth-longest active streak in the country, while the Friars drop to 11-27.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Friars started the game with back-to-back singles, but the Terriers bounced back with Heinen picking off the lead runner at second on a perfect throw.
  • Annerino (3-2) then recorded a strikeout and induced a line out to left to get out of the jam.
  • In the bottom half of the first, senior Emma Wong drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on Heinen's single.
  • Wong then put BU ahead for good by scoring from third when Heinen drew a throw to second in a stolen-base attempt.
  • Providence led off the second with a single and advanced the runner to second on a sacrifice but but then followed with a fly out and strikeout.
  • Heinen extended the lead to 2-0 in the third by tripling to right center and plating Wong from first.
  • BU put the game away in the fifth with five runs off four hits, starting with senior Kaitlin Sahlinger's single to center.
  • After senior Brittany Younan drew a 12-pitch walk, Wong loaded the bases on a bunt single.
  • Heinen then recorded a two-RBI double and was followed by Schanda's three-run homer to left.
  • Providence only managed two singles in the final four innings for the loss.
